Dorothy M. Kellogg, age 98, of Watertown, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, at Jenkins Living Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 21, 2018 at Cornerstone Methodist Church in Watertown with Reverend Steve Anderson officiating.

Visitation will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Pallbearers will be Laurie Solari, Kent Kienholz, Stephannie Keller, Ann Kellogg, Jensi Andrus, Debbie Moldenhauer, Heidi Preheim, Bob Jostad and Ellie Jostad.

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Watertown. 

 Dorothy Marie Kellogg was born July 26, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Carl and Marie (Mundhenke) Sorteberg. She was raised by her beloved Mother and Stepfather Edmund Schulz.

Dorothy attended school in Tracy, Minnesota, and schools in South Dakota, graduating from Watertown High School in 1938. She then worked at the State Highway Office until her marriage to Lawrence “Shorty” Kellogg on June 16, 1940.

The couple lived on the Kellogg farm where they raised their three children. Shorty passed away Dec. 19, 2009.

In addition to being a farm wife and mother, Dorothy volunteered at her Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, was the MYF Director, and Camp Counselor for eight years. She was a member of her church circle, was at times its organist, sang in the choir and became its director. She served as the local United Methodist Women’s President. She went on to become the state United Methodist Women’s Conference Treasurer, Secretary, and its President.  She was on its Board of Laity and Board of Missions. She served 15 years as a Trustee of Dakota Wesleyan University. 

While working for Midland National Life Insurance Company, Dorothy was a long standing member of the HOA (Help One Another Club) and Farmer’s Club.  She became a member of the Watertown Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, the Arts Council and held offices in the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She directed the local ladies barbershop chorus, The Sweet Adelines, and became active in Codington County Democrats and the Women’s Resource Center.  She served for 32 years on the Jenkins Living Center Board of Directors and that of the Watertown School District. 

In 1981, Dorothy was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives and later to the Senate. She also served as the first female Sergeant At Arms.

In 2010, she was the recipient of the prestigious Spirit of South Dakota Award. “Hers was a life well lived.”

Mrs. Kellogg was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lawrence “Shorty” Kellogg, her son Ralph, her three sisters Naomi Skulley, Avis Ellyson, and Connie Kiel, and her granddaughter Nicole Kienholz.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Bessie (Ron) Boyd of Idaho; her daughter-in-law, Tamara (Ralph) Kellogg; her children, Larry Kellogg of Watertown and Jean (Bob) Jostad of Brookings; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
