Dynamic trio leads Dolphin girls to Region 3B crown

DE SMET – The Deubrook Area girls and the De Smet boys took the team crowns at the Region 3B Track and Field Meet on Thursday.

The top two finishers in each event and those achieving in-season qualifying standards advanced to the Class B State Track and Field Meet, to be held Friday, May 24-Saturday, May-25, at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

The Dolphins are the two-time defending state champions after taking second in 2016.

Girls

Deubrook totaled 174 team points in first and Estelline/Hendricks was second at 151. Arlington (75) finished fourth and Lake Preston (39) was eighth.

Shaylee DeBeer broke a pair of meet records as she, Ashley Vandermeer and Josie Olsen each won two individual events to lead the Dolphins.

DeBeer won the 300-meter hurdles in 46.19 seconds, breaking a 23-year-old record.

She topped her own mark in the triple jump at 35 feet, 10 3/4 inches.

Vandermeer was first in the 200 (26.67) and long jump (15-11 1/2) while taking second in the triple jump (34-0).

Olsen crossed first in the 800 (2:24.19) and 1,600 (5:29.59).

Ellie Olsen won the 3,200 (12:19.77) and was runner-up in the 1,600 (5:34.46).

Ellie Olsen, DeBeer, Andrea Vandermeer and Josie Olsen won the 4x800-meter relay in a meet-record time of 10:07.81.

Josie Olsen, Miranda Moravetz, Delaney Pedersen and DeBeer were tops in the 4x400 with a 4:14.53 clocking.

Brooke Koppatschek, Joeve Krier, Moravetz and Ashley Vandermeer placed first in the 4x200 in 1:51.51.

Carley Landmark ended up second in the 100 hurdles (17.37) and Trixie Schlechter matched that finish in the long jump (15-1 1/2). Koppatschek, Krier, Moravetz and Andrea Vandermeer finished second in the medley relay (4:36.99).

The Redhawks’ Sophie Johnson won the 100 hurdles (16.11) and was second in the pole vault (10-6). She placed third in the triple jump (32-11 3/4) but had a state-qualifying mark.

Kaytlyn Hawley won the shot put (38-4 1/2).

Tiffany Vohlken was first in the discus (108-5).

Christine Nefzger cleared 11 feet to take the pole vault title.

Nefzger, Johnson, Kylie Beare and Cora Hofer teamed to take the 4x100 title in 52.59.

Beare, Hofer, Kaylee Johnson and Kaylee Faehnrich were second in the 4x400 (4:20.65).

Sadie Johnson placed second in the 3,200 (13:07.86). Beare had a state-qualifying mark of 32-10 1/4 in the triple jump while taking fourth.

The Cardinals’ Hadley Carlson won the high jump at 5-2. Makayla Nelson (shot put, 35-6) and Jayna Haufschild (pole vault, 9-0) both placed third but had state-qualifying marks.

The Divers’ Lindsay Hillestad, Madison Perkins, Ashley Neeley and Ashlyn DeKnikker won the medley relay with a time of 4:34.06.

Boys

De Smet (126) edged James Valley Christian (118) for the team title. Deubrook (100.5) was third, Lake Preston (74.5) took fourth, and Arlington and Estelline/Hendricks tied for sixth at 60.5.

The Dolphins’ Clayton Koppatschek won the 100 in 11.18 seconds and was second in the 200 with a 23.81 clocking.

Aczel Garcia was first in the 400 with a time of 52.25.

Koppatschek, Treven Grimstad, Trace Vierhuf and Garcia won the 4x200 in 1:35.98.

Koppatschek, Vierhuf, Even Kloevestad and Garcia ended up second in the 4x400 in 3:38.52. Grimsrud, Kloevestad, Dartanian Lehman and Gavin Landmark matched that finish in the medley relay with a 4:14.2 clocking.

The Divers’ Rhett McMasters was first in the 3,200 (10:35.31) and second in the 1,600 (4:49.85).

Placing second were Byron Bumann in the shot put (46-4 1/2) and Jasper Denison in the high jump (5-9).

The Cardinals’ Trevor Larsen was tops in the high jump at 5-9. Gavin Holland took second in the 100 (11.34) and Nick Kersting was runner-up in the pole vault (11-0). Larsen, Kersting, Joshua Roth and Rett Osthus were second in the 4x100 (47.28).

The Redhawks’ Harrison Wegner cleared 11-6 to claim the pole vault crown.
