Edward H. Lorenz, 95, of Brookings, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2018, at the Brookings Health System in Brookings.

Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.  Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.  Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.  The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be directed to the George Dokken VFW Post 2118 or Ed’s wish that you take a kid fishing.

Edward Hans Lorenz was born June 23, 1922 in Miller to Hans and Anna (Kroyman) Lorenz.

Ed’s parents both died when Ed was 10 years old.  Ed was lovingly raised by his sister, Lillian.  They lived, loved and shared their lives until Ed’s high school graduation.

Growing up in a rural community, Ed became interested in hunting, fishing and high school athletics, especially basketball.  His interest in fish and game spawned his interest in taxidermy.  This was a hobby that later in life became a sideline business.  He was known regionally for his workmanship and was selected by Sen. Karl Mundt to do a pheasant, which the senator presented to President Eisenhower.

Upon graduating from Miller High School in 1942, Ed worked in the Miller area until his marriage to Gladys Harvey of Brookings on Feb. 22, 1944.  That same year, Ed enlisted in the US Navy and served in World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946.

With his military service completed, the family settled in Brookings and Ed worked for Sokota Hybrid Producers until his retirement.  In addition to his full-time job, Ed continued his taxidermy business until the fish were biting.  Fishing, hunting, gardening, time with his friends at the VFW and grandchildren’s activities kept Ed very busy.  One of the things Ed was most known for, was always wearing a short-sleeved shirt, no matter the weather.

Some of Ed’s fondest memories were stories about taking a kid fishing.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Don) Larson of Brookings; two sons, Stanley (Diane) Lorenz of Harrisburg and Mark Lorenz of St. Cloud, Minnesota; eight grandchildren;  11 great- grandchildren; special friends, Rhonda Lorenz, Yvonne Lorenz and Sharon Cook; very special neighbors and friends, the Harlan Larkins’, Kevin Harveys’, Tom Bells’, Dustin Bell, Kristi Tornquist, Don and Marvene Johnson, Dr. Dan and Deb Carlson family, Eric Weisman family and staff, the “Sokota Crew’ and his many fishing friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; brother, Fred and four sisters, Marie, Edith, Emma and Lillian.

Condolences may be sent to the family through www.rudesfuneralhome.com.
