Evelyn L. Freyberg, 85, of Brookings, passed away Friday, July 16, 2021, at her daughter’s home, under hospice care.
Private family services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2021, and will be livestreamed through the Rude’s Funeral Home Facebook page.
Evelyn Lou Mullett was born on Dec. 20, 1935, in Winfred, SD, the daughter of Harold and Gertrude (Lenz) Mullett. She attended school in Rutland, graduating from Rutland High School in 1953.
One day, while roller skating at Danceland, on Lake Campbell, she met Ewald Freyberg, when she asked him to teach her how to skate backwards. The couple later married on Jan. 16, 1954. They were blessed with and raised five daughters, Deanna, Darla, Melody, Karen and Evonne. They farmed in Brookings County, tending to chickens, pigs, cattle, and growing large gardens, always canning her produce.
She worked at SDSU Food Service, where she loved the students. She went on to work for MidTex, where she soldered relays. She concluded her career working at Brookings Health System in medical records, where she retired. Over the years, she also helped her husband, with his seed business.
Evelyn was a longtime member of First English Lutheran Church in Aurora. There, she was actively involved in Ladies Aid, Sunday School, and leading the children’s music program. She later became a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Brookings.
She looked forward to going to area auctions, looking for little treasures. She loved to host gatherings of family and friends, and will be remembered for her cooking and baking, especially her cookies.
She was always excited to welcome her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in her home. Evelyn was a very caring, loving and watchful mother and grandmother, always knowing the needs and personality of each of her children and grandchildren.
She shared her enthusiasm for life and faith through her infectious laughter, sense of humor and being an excellent role model.
Evelyn is survived by her five daughters, Deanna Jones of Brookings, SD, Darla Olds (Dave) of Littleton, CO, Melody Freyberg of Brookings, SD, Karen Ahrendt (Dave) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Evonne Freyberg of Brookings, SD; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ewald; her grandson, Geoff Jones; brothers, Ivan and Harold Jr.; and sisters, Margaret, Lela and Grace.
Condolences may be sent to the family through www.rudesfuneralhome.com.
