Favorites advance on day two of State Tournament

MITCHELL – Parkston dropped Tabor 5-2, defending-champion Alexandria edged Lesterville 8-7, Platte topped Volga 6-4 and the veteran Renner Bullets beat Lake Norden 5-2 as the first round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament continued Thursday at Cadwell Park.

Favorites advance on day two of State Tournament

MITCHELL – Parkston dropped Tabor 5-2, defending-champion Alexandria edged Lesterville 8-7, Platte topped Volga 6-4 and the veteran Renner Bullets beat Lake Norden 5-2 as the first round of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament continued Thursday at Cadwell Park.

In the second round, the Mudcats face the Angels on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and the Killer Tomatoes play the Bullets on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

 Parkston 5, Tabor 2

Matt Malloy hit a three-run homer with two away in the top of the fifth to break a 2-all tie.

Jeff Harris led off the game with a double and scored on Spencer Freudenthal’s single two pitches later.

The Bluebirds’ Beau Rothschadl and Brandon Kemp had RBI singles in the third to take a 2-1 lead.

Malloy led off the fourth with a hit and Zack Uttecht followed with a hit of his own. A botched pickoff attempt allowed Malloy to score.

Jake Weber allowed two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk in six innings to pick up the win. Brady Nolz allowed five hits in three scoreless innings to notch the save.

Malloy was 3-for-4 at the plate and Harris ended up 3-for-5.

Tabor’s Beau Rothschadl went 4-for-5. Joey Slama and Bailey Sage added two hits apiece.

Christian Uecker took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk in five innings.

No. 9 hitter Jarrod Zens’ two-run walkoff single helped the defending-champion and perennial-power Angels get out of the first round.

Joran Gau singled, pinch-hitter Luke Bamberg reached on a bunt single and Michael Schoettmer was hit by a pitch to set the stage. Following a fielder’s choice, Zens took care of business.

Gau finished 4-for-4. Peyton Smith and Jed Schmidt both had two hits and a pair of RBIs.

Ethan Davis recorded the final four outs to earn the win. He allowed one hit and K’ed one batter. Starter Tyson Gau allowed seven runs – five earned – on 14 hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

The Broncs’ Dave Schmidt went deep, finishing 3-for-5. Brandon Nickolite was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

Nickolite took the loss in relief, giving up two runs on seven hits in 2 1/3.

 Platte 6, Volga 4

The Killer Tomatoes rallied from a 4-3 deficit with two runs in the sixth and added an insurance run in the eighth.

Ryan Allen singled with one out in the key frame, before Derek Soukup and Gene Kitchens reached on errors.

Michael Buitenbos followed with a two-run single to put Platte ahead 5-4.

In the eighth, Hayden Kuipen singled, moved to second on a groundout and stole third, advancing home on an error on the play to provide for the final margin.

The Killer Tomatoes scored three times in the first frame.

Buitenbos and Richard Sternberg singled to get it going. Hunter Hewitt had an RBI double and then Grant Long and Phil Johnson plated Sternberg and Hewitt, respectively, with groundouts to make it 3-0.

The Cormorants got on the board when Tyson Sonnenburg belted a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left with one out in the third.

In the fourth, Zach Puetz reached on an error and Austin Buysse singled. A fielder’s choice left runners at the corners. Parker Puetz plated his older brother with a fielder’s choice and, following a Cole Gross single, Layne Lucas had an RBI single to knot things up.

Sonnenburg homered again in the sixth – again on a 2-1 pitch to left – to put the ‘Rants up 4-3.

For Platte, Buitenbos went 3-for-4. Johnson went seven innings, surrendering four runs – two earned – on nine hits with five Ks. He earned the win. Long picked up the save after striking out four of the six batters he faced over the final two frames.

Lucas 3-for-4 for Volga.

Left-hander Trevor Olson gave up five runs – three earned – on nine hits with three Ks and a BB in seven innings while taking the loss.

 Renner Bullets 5, Lake Norden 2

Kris Regas shut down the Lakers over the final six innings to help the Bullets advance.

Regas gave up two hits, striking out 12 and walking a pair.

Jordon Johnson was the tough-luck loser, surrendering five runs – three earned – on just four hits with five Ks and five BBs in eight innings. He threw 140 pitches.

Renner’s Brian McGuire and Kole Zimmerman walked to open the sixth – the former scored on an error to knot things up.

Tim Huber drove in Zimmerman with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.

In the seventh, Justin Reilly walked and advanced on Chris Brown’s sacrifice.

Brandon Lane, who earlier doubled, followed with a triple and then scored on Grant Hieb’s hit.
