BROOKINGS COUNTY — Firefighters were kept hopping Saturday in Brookings County, responding to blazes that, combined, caused nearly $35,000 in estimated damage.

Elkton shed

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Elkton Fire Department responded to this fire at 10:09 a.m., according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. A resident in the 200 block of Warehouse Street had just left the shed, and when he turned around flames were seen coming from it.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire and discovered that multiple lawn mowers, weed eaters, tools and a Bobcat CT2025 tractor were damaged in the blaze. The damage estimate is $25,000, and the fire’s cause remains unknown as of Monday.

Bruce lawn mower

The sheriff’s office and Volga Fire Department responded to this fire at a residence on 463rd Avenue near 205th Street southwest of Bruce at 3:38 a.m. after the resident discovered their lawn mower had caught fire.

A John Deere riding mower caught fire after being used four days prior. The fire spread to a nearby shed and a 2008 Dodge Durango, causing approximately $9,400 in damage. The fire’s cause wasn’t known as of Monday morning, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote in the release.

Both incidents continue to be investigated by the sheriff’s office.

Corson fatal wreck

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety released the name of the 62-year-old man who was killed when he made a U-turn on his motorcycle and was stuck by a car.

Randall Loerch of Spirit Lake, Iowa, was traveling north on S.D. Highway 11 near mile marker 85 north of Corson on July 9. The motorcycle pulled over to the side of the road. A 2016 Hyundai Tucson was also traveling north on 11 behind the motorcycle. As the Hyundai approached the motorcycle, the motorcycle turned out in front of the Hyundai to perform a U-turn. The Hyundai struck the motorcycle.

Loerch was taken to a local hospital where he died.
