VOLGA – Garretson Post 23 edged Volga Post 114, 8-7, in a Legion baseball game Tuesday night at Hoff Field.

Johnny Gassman went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in the win. Shay Gibson totaled two RBIs and Jared Fitzgerald added a pair of hits.

Keaton Wagner was credited with the team’s other RBI. MJ Vandersnick scored three times and Michael Witte twice.

Volga committed nine errors, as just three of Garretson’s eight runs were earned.

Post 114 finished with 10 hits, including five doubles and a triple.

Chase Ringheimer led off the bottom of the first with a two-bagger, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Matt Larson sacrifice fly to put the home team ahead 1-0 early.

Post 23 scored three runs in the second.

Volga’s Tyler Schwartz, who finished 3-for-4, got a two-out rally going in the bottom of the second with a double. He scored on Alex Bultje’s single soon thereafter to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Both teams put up four runs in the third.

Ringheimer stroked his second double of the day and Larson followed with a single for his second RBI of the game.

Zack Puetz had a one-out double.

Cole Gross stepped up with a two-run triple and then scored on Collin VanderWal’s sacrifice fly to pull Post 114 within 7-6.

Garretson took advantage of a two-out error in the top of the seventh to plate an insurance run.

Nick Strasburg opened the bottom of the seventh with a double and quickly advanced to third on passed ball. Puetz followed with a walk.

Gross’ sacrifice fly drove in Strasburg – his third RBI of the night.

With two outs, Schwartz singled and Bultje walked to load the bases; however, a groundout ended the game.

Witte earned the win on the mound, giving up five runs on six hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2 1/3 innings. Gassman notched the save after allowing two runs on four hits and six walks with one strikeout over the final 4 2/3.

Strasburg surrendered seven runs – three earned – on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts in five innings in the loss. Gross gave up one run – unearned – on three hits and two walks with one strikeout in the final two frames.

Volga Post 114 and Post 23 face off again Thursday at 7 p.m. in Garretson.
