SIOUX FALLS – A legendary game in South Dakota boys basketball history will be recreated when Redfield/Doland plays Lake Preston on Jan. 5 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
The Hall of Fame Game will tip-off at 5 p.m. on the Heritage Court and will be hosted by the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
“South Dakotans look forward to our state tournaments every March. That cherished tradition began in 1912 when Redfield and Lake Preston met in the championship game of the very first state tournament,” said Hall of Fame executive director Dave Wagner.
“The Hall of Fame will observe its 10th anniversary in 2019. To commemorate that milestone we believe that a perfect way to begin the New Year is to bring together the two teams that made history 106 years ago.”
The 1912 state tournament was held at the old Daum Opera House in Huron. Redfield used a stirring second-half rally to earn the championship by defeating Lake Preston 33-25.
Wagner has made recent visits to Redfield and Lake Preston to speak to groups about the importance of that first state tournament and to share insights into the evolution of the Hall of Fame.
Fans who attend the Hall of Fame Game are encouraged to spend time enjoying the varied Hall of Fame displays at the Pentagon. The primary Hall of Fame area is on the main floor near the entrance. Additional displays can be found in the corridors of the second floor as well as in the Hall of Fame Room 2110 where courtesy coffee and cookies will be served.
“We extend an invitation to all South Dakota fans to join us for an evening of basketball on Jan. 5 as the Hall of Fame recognizes the programs that played such an important role in getting our state tournament tradition started,” said Wagner.
In a pre-game ceremony, the Hall of Fame will present specially designed keychains to players and coaches that commemorate the 1912 tournament and the 2019 Hall of Fame Game.
