MITCHELL – The Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks and Canova Gang each advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament Tuesday night.

Hartford/Humboldt, Canova advance

MITCHELL – The Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks and Canova Gang each advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament Tuesday night. The Gamecocks defeated Redfield 9-7 and Canova beat Dell Rapids PBR 11-1 in eight innings Hartford/Humboldt and Canova will play in the quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

 Hartford/Humboldt 9, Redfield 7

The Gamecocks jumped out to a 9-0 lead and didn’t look back. Drew Eldeen threw eight and two thirds innings and picked up the win for Hartford/Humboldt. He gave up seven runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and five walks.

Joeseph Hanisch went 2-for-5 with three RBI’s. Hanisch, Kyle Bailey, Chad Morrison and Devon Garry each had doubles for the Gamecocks. Noah Vettrus went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s.

The Phesants scored three runs in the final two innings, but their comeback came up short. Tommy Gregg picked up the loss for the Pheasants after pitching just the first inning. He gave up five earned runs on six hits with no strikeouts and two walks. Redfield’s Levi Logan went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI’s.

 Canova Gang 11, Dell Rapids PBR 1 (8 inn.)

Canova used a five-run fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead which propelled them to the victory in eight innings. Derek Miller pitched a complete game and gave up one run on four hits. He had seven strikeouts and one walk.

Jared Miller went 3-for-4 with four RBI’s. Kendall Gassman went 1-for-5 with three RBI’s. Trey Krier went 4-for-5 with an RBI and Tyler Genzlinger went 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Tanner Olmstead was awarded the loss for Dell Rapids after pitching the first three one third innings. He gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Nate McKee went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
