We are writing this letter to raise awareness about the needs of a new Hillcrest Elementary building. Hillcrest was built in 1955 and has served its purpose as an educational facility for the community for the past 67 years.
Many generations have fond memories of attending school in this building.
Some of the upgrades identified by professionals as needed for this building include a new heating and cooling system, wider hallways and ADA accessibility upgrades.
One example of a heating concern is that teachers currently need to put wet paper towels on their thermostats to warm their rooms. Over the past years, teachers have had to use storage areas and even closets for small group instruction. Our hallways are narrow and are a safety concern, especially at the beginning of the day. Currently, our playground area, two entrances and our library mezzanine do not comply with ADA guidelines.
Hillcrest is certainly some place special. It is a home away from home for our children every school day. It is a place where children come to learn, socialize and be nurtured. Please help us provide the healthy and safe learning environment that our children deserve.
We are extremely excited about the potential opportunity of what a new school would bring to the next generation of Brookings Bobcats, as well as to our community.
