BROOKINGS – South Dakota State beat Western Illinois 18-8 (eight innings) on Saturday and 8-7 on Sunday as the Jackrabbits won the three-game Summit League series 2-1 at Erv Huether Field.

Jackrabbits beat Leathernecks twice

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State beat Western Illinois 18-8 (eight innings) on Saturday and 8-7 on Sunday as the Jackrabbits won the three-game Summit League series 2-1 at Erv Huether Field.

The Fighting Leathernecks dropped to 18-25 (12-10).

The Jackrabbits (19-22, 12-12) open a three-game set at IPFW on Friday at 2 p.m.

SDSU and WIU split the regular-season series 3-3 this year.

Sunday

• SDSU 8, Western Illinois 7

Skyler Wenninger’s walkoff hit with two outs in the ninth lifted the Jackrabbits over the Fighting Leathernecks.

Landon Badger reached via a two-out walk and stole second to set the stage for Winninger, who came through with a single to center field.

SDSU overcame a big game by WIU’s Adam McGinnis, who hit a pair of three-run homers.

Badger finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and two RBIs. Matt Johnson had a pair of hits, including a home run, and Newt Johnson doubled twice.

The Jackrabbits got off to another fast start as Newt Johnson stroked a run-scoring double in the first and Tony Kjolsing tallied a two-run single in the second.

Matt Johnson went deep in the third inning – his 10th home run of the season – before Josh Kunzmann drove in Newt Johnson with a squeeze bunt and Badger notched an RBI triple to push the margin to 6-3.

McGinnis’ first three-run shot came in the top of the fifth. Badger’s sacrifice fly drove in Newt Johnson to put SDSU up 7-3 in the bottom of the inning.

McGinni’s second three-run homer pulled the Fighting Leathernecks came in the eighth, and Drue Galassi’s round-tripper knotted things up at 7-all in the top of the ninth.

Chris Halbur picked up the pitching win after allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts over the final 2 2/3 innings.

Starter Ethan Kenkel gave up three runs on three hits and two walks with five punchouts in 4 1/3 innings of work. Bryce Hanson surrendered three runs on two hits with three strikeouts over the next two frames.

Nick Smith also doubled for SDSU.

For WIU, Galassi was 2-for-4 with the homer and three runs scored.

Sam Cottingham-Beard took the loss on the mound, allowing one run on just one hit with four walks and three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

The Jackrabbits racked up 18 hits in the rout.

Tony Kjolsing went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and three RBIs.

Newt Johnson also homered and doubled while driving in a pair of runs and scoring three times.

Nick Smith finished 3-of-5 with a double and four RBIs. Jake Thompson ended up 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Skyler Wenninger added a 2-for-4 performance, driving in three runs. Josh Kunzmann went 2-for-4 and Luke Ringhofer doubled.

The Fighting Leathernecks’ Adam McGinnis homered and doubled.

Mitch Ellis went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Roman Visintine was 2-for-4 with a double. Drue Galassi had two hits, including a home run.

Derek Feige, the third of four SDSU pitcher, earned the win despite surrendering three runs on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
