Jackrabbits drill ranked Leathernecks on road

MACOMB, Ill. – Taryn Christion had a hand in six touchdowns – matching a career high with five TD tosses – as No. 11/8 South Dakota State handled No. 12/14 Western Illinois 52-24 in Missouri Valley Football Conference action on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Hanson Field.

He went 26-of-41 for 386 yards with an interception, and ran for 37 yards and a score.

Jake Wieneke scored three times, as he totaled season-high marks of 97 yards and eight receptions.

The senior has scored at least three touchdowns in a game six times in his career (he had four versus Duquesne on Aug. 31). He reached double-digit TD catches for the fourth consecutive season.

On the FCS career charts, he moved from fourth to third in touchdown receptions (54), fifth to fourth in receiving yards (4,671) and 22nd to 19th in catches (260).

Dallas Goedert notched eight receptions for 113 yards. Brady Mengarelli ran for 70 yards on 12 attempts. Both of Marquise Lewis’ catches went for scores.

The Jackrabbits held a 579-285 advantage in total offense while possessing the ball for nearly 37 minutes.

Christian Rozeboom had 10 tackles and accounted for both of SDSU’s takeaways – an INT and a fumble recovery.

Christion polished off a sharp opening drive with a 30-yard TD toss to Lewis. WIU’s Nathan Erickson then kicked a 45-yard field goal.

WIU’s Quentin Moon picked off a pass two plays later and returned it 22 yards to the SDSU 11. Steve McShane scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 6-yard rush to give the Leathernecks their lone lead of the game at 10-7 with 5:40 to play in the opening period.

Chase Vinatieri, who went 7-of-7 on PAT kicks, booted a 30-yard field goal later in the first to knot the score at 10-all.

Wieneke sandwiched scoring grabs of 13 yards and 1 yard from Christion around McShane’s wild 39-yard scoring scamper, leaving the halftime score at 24-17 in favor of the Jackrabbits.

SDSU outscored WIU 21-0 in the third.

Lewis found paydirt on a 46-yard catch-and-run.

Mikey Daniel capped a short drive – set up by Rozebomm’s recovery on a fumble, which was forced by Jordan Brown, who finished with eight tackles – with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone.

Daniel rushed 12 times for 66 yards.

Wieneke’s third TD catch – a 6-yarder – made it 45-17 late in the third.

Sean McGuire had a 47-yard scoring striking to McShane 9 seconds into the fourth.

Christion closed it out with a 1-yard TD run with 9:13 showing on the clock.

McShane totaled 90 rushing yards (two scores) and three receptions for 66 yards (one TD).

McGuire was 13-of-20 for 155 yards with a TD and an INT.

Jaelon Acklin had 59 receiving yards to push his league-leading season total to 1,002.

Brett Taylor, the nation’s leading tackler, made 14 stops and David Griffith added 13.

Western Illinois dropped to 5-3 (2-3).

South Dakota State (6-2, 3-2) plays host to No. 2 North Dakota State (8-0, 5-0) in the Dakota Marker Game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

Notes (from SDSU Sports Information): Christion ranks second in program history in both passing yards (7,054) and total offense (8,040). ... Christion has thrown for five touchdowns in a game four times and now ranks second in SDSU history with 58 total in his career. ... Daniel has rushed for a TD in four consecutive games.

Missouri Valley Football Conference

• North Dakota State 30, Northern Iowa 14

FARGO, N.D. – Robbie Grimsley had a pick-six as the undefeated Bison forced Panther quarterback Eli Dunne into five turnovers – two interceptions and three fumbles – to improve to 100-12 since the start of the 2010 season.

Ty Brookings scored on a 22-yard run and Cam Pedersen booted a 31-yard field goal to put NDSU up 17-7 through three quarters.

The Bison pushed the margin to 30-7 in the fourth as RJ Urzendowski caught a 31-yard TD toss from Easton Stuck and Bruce Anderson found the end zone from a yard out with 7:44 remaining in the game.

Anderson ran for 78 yards and Brookings 59. Stick was 8-of-22 for 136 yards with the TD and two INTs.

Levi Jordheim tallied a school- and MVFC-record-tying three fumble recoveries for NDSU. Nick DeLuca had seven tackles and forced two fumbles, as he and Caleb Butler both recorded a pair of sacks. Tre Dempsey added a pick.

Dunne went 14-of-22 for 109 yards, with scoring passes to Daurice Fountain of 8 yards early in the second and 32 yards late in the game. Marcus Weymiller picked up 69 yards on the ground.

Jared Farley paced the Panthers with 12 tackles, including a sack, and Adam Reth made 10 stops. Reth blocked two field-goal attempts.

Total offense: NDSU 64 plays-305 yards (41-169 rushing/8-23-136 passing), UNI 59 plays-157 yards (37-48 rushing/14-22-109 passing). Turnovers: NDSU 2 (2 INT), UNI 5 (2 INT/3 fumbles). Time of possession: NDSU 31:29, UNI 28:31.

• South Dakota 42, Southern Illinois 0

VERMILLION – The Coyotes forced five turnovers, two of which led directly to touchdowns, as they bounced back from their first loss of the season with a shutout victory.

Both starting quarterbacks – USD’s Chris Streveler (first drive) and SIU’s Sam Straub (early second quarter) – left the game with injuries.

Austin Simmons was 11-of-18 for 91 yards with two TDs for the home team. Mike Fredrick ran for 94 yards and Kai Henry 73 as both players found the end zone.

Simmons hooked up with Brett Samson for a 2-yard TD 5 1/2 mintues into the game. Henry’s 1-yard plunge made it 14-0 later in the period.

A fumble forced by USD defensive end Nick Kramer and scooped up by safety Ben Garlock set up Simmons’ second scoring pass – a 17-yarder to Alonge Brooks – which pushed the margin to 21-0 just before halftime.

Andrew Gray picked off a pass and returned it 97 yards with 20 seconds to go in the third. It marked the longest INT return in school history and the program’s first pick-six since 2013.

Fredrick found paydirt from a yard out with 5:39 remaining in the game.

Mike Johnson added a long pick six – 79 yards – with 3:29 showing on the clock.

Phillip Powell and Alex Coker both had seven tackles for USD. Isaac Armstead and Brandon Colpitts both picked off a pass, and Ben Garlock recovered a fumble.

SIU backup Tanner Hearn was 14-of-33 for 231 yards with four INTs. Darrell James picked up 105 receiving yards and Cameron Walter logged 59 yards on the ground. Ryan Neal had nine tackles.

Total offense: USD 70 plays-280 yards (49-177 rushing/13-21-103 passing), SIU 79 plays-402 yards (39-147 rushing/17-40-255 passing). Turnovers: USD 0, SIU 5 (4 INT/ 1 fumble). Time of possession: USD 30:30, SIU 29:30.

• Illinois State 35, Youngstown State 0

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – James Robinson ran for 117 yards and three touchdowns as the Redbirds spoiled the Penguins’ homecoming and put YSU’s postseason hopes in jeopardy.

ISU outgained YSU 341-147 in total yards of offense, including a 299-84 advantage on the ground, and possessed the ball for more than 36 1/2 minutes.

Markel Smith picked up 124 yards on 18 rushes and scored once. Jake Kolbe was 6-of-11 for 42 yards.

Robinson opened the scoring with a n 11-yard run at the 9:51 mark of the opening stanza. Matt McCown recovered a fumble and returned it 26 yards to the end zone less than a minute later.

Smith’s 1-yard TD plunge made it 21-0 heading to halftime.

Robinson had touchdown runs of 2 yards in the third and 3 yards in the fourth to provide for the final margin.

Ty DeForest and Brannon Barry both made six tackles, Tyree Horton had two sacks and DraShane Glass picked off a pass for the Redbirds.

The Penguins’ Armand Dellovade made 11 stops and Jalyn Powell 10.

Total offense: IlSU 65 plays-341 yards (53-299 rushing/6-12-42 passing), YSU 50 plays-147 yards (32-84 rushing/8-18-116 passing). Turnovers: IlSU 0, YSU 2 (1 INT/1 fumble). Time of possession: IlSU 36:37, YSU 23:23.

• Missouri State 59, Indiana State 20

SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The Bears racked up 624 yards of offense to earn their first Valley victory of the season and hand the Sycamores their 11th consecutive loss overall.

Peyton Huslig went 12-of-14 for 211 yards with a pair of touchdowns while running for 174 yards on just seven attempts with two TDs. Jason Randall made the most of his three receptions, picking up 97 yards and scoring three times.

Jason Randall, Deion Hilliman and Mason Myron each scored a rushing touchdown. Backup J.T. Granato finished 7-of-10 for 74 yards with a score.

MSU’s Angelo Garbutt had 16 tackles and McNeece Egbim 11. Claudio Martin recovered a fumble.

The Bears led 17-0 after a quarter and 38-6 at halftime.

ISU’s Isaac Harker (10-of-18 for 111 yards) and Cade Sparks (11-of-22 for 86 yards) both three for a touchdown. LeMonte Booker logged 61 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Jonah Griffith made 10 tackles and forced a fumble, which was recovered by Inoke Moala.

Total offense: MSU 68 plays-624 yards (44-339 rushing/19-24-285 passing), InSU 74 plays-347 yards (33-138 rushing/22-41-209 passing). Turnovers: MSU 1 (1 fumble), InSU 1 (1 fumble). Time of possession: MSU 34:56, InSU 25:04.

Notable games

• Duquesne 37, Sacred Heart 21

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A.J. Hines rushed for 88 yards and three touchdowns as the Dukes (7-1, 4-0) picked up their seventh consecutive victory with a Northeast Conference defeat of the Pioneers (3-5, 1-2).

John Domit kicked field goals of 41 and 37 yards in the opening quarter, before Sacred Heart pulled even at 6-all on Kevin Duke’s 1-yard plunge in the second.

Duquesne’s Tommy Stuart was 16-of-21 for 230 yards and Nehari Crawford finished with 143 yards on six receptions. The duo hooked up for a 56-yard score to make it 13-6.

Hines had TD runs of 5 and 2 yards in the second stanza and 26 yards in the third to push the margin to 34-6.

Sacred Heart totaled 406 yards but turned the ball over three times. In addition to the TD rush, Duke finished 13-of-27 for 195 yards with two TDs and a pair of INTs.

• Drake 17, Davidson 12

DES MOINES, Iowa – Will Warner returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown to highlight another strong defensive effort by the Bulldogs (5-3, 4-1) during a Pioneer League defeat of the Wildcats (2-6, 0-5).

Drake is allowing 15 points per game in conference play heading into next week’s matchup with league-leading San Diego (6-2, 5-0).

Brock Reichardt opened the scoring with a 20-yard TD run, before Warner’s pick-six pushed the margin to 14-0.

Davidson’s Trevor Smith had a 29-yard field goal as the first half ended and added a 27-yarder in the third to pull the visitors within 14-6. Danny Donley put Drake up 17-6 with a 41-yard boot with 11:05 remaining in the fourth. Stockton McGuire had a 27-yard TD toss to Williams Wicks with 51 seconds to go to provide for the final margin.

Drake (235) and Davidson (236) combined for just 471 yards of offense, and both teams turned the ball over three times.

Reichardt ran for 106 yards. Sam Hefner was 11-of-24 for 94 yards with two INTs.

For Davidson, McGuire finished 15-of-34 for 142 yards with an INT. Wesley Dugger ran for 80 yards.

• Montana State 28, Idaho State 14

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Chris Murray scored on a 2-yard run with 9:56 left in the third and Mac Bignell gave the home team a 14-point cushion with an 18-yard pick-six with 8:55 remaining in the game as the Bobcats (4-4, 4-2) beat the Bengals (4-5, 2-4) in a Big Sky Conference game.

Murray finished 10-of-20 for 231 yards, recording TD tosses of 1 yard to Mitch Herbert and 43 yards to Troy Andersen to make it 14-0 after a quarter. Idaho State pulled even at halftime.

Nick LaSane ran for 83 yards and Murray 67.

• North Dakota 48, Sacramento State 21

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Fighting Hawks (3-6, 2-4) outscored the Vikings (0-8, 0-5) 48-0 over the final three periods to post the Big Sky Conference win.

John Santiago returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown, Austin Cieslak had a 5-yard pick-six and Carter Wilson added a 50-yard scoop-and-score. Santiago, Brady Oliveira and James Johannesson each added a rushing TD.
