BROOKINGS – Seventh-ranked South Dakota State handled Missouri State in an MVFC matchup on a wet and chilly Saturday afternoon at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, winning 59-7.

“I’m excited to get a win; I’m excited to honor our military with that kind of performance,” said SDSU coach John Stiegelmeier following Military Appreciation Day victory. “I’m really excited about some of our young guys stepping up and making some big plays.

“Other than some penalties, I thought we played a really complete game. I respect (Missouri State) coach (Dave) Steckel, I think they’re going in the right direction; but I’m excited where our program is at right now.”

The Jackrabbits totaled 547 yards of offense and limited the Bears to 183 on 70 plays – a 2.61 average. SDSU picked off four passes and recorded four sacks.

“I thought (the defense) played really well,” said Stiegelmeier. “They had the one drive … I’m really impressed with how we’re playing defensively. We have some good players and they’re doing their job – their 1/11th.”

Pierre Strong Jr. sparked the home team early with scoring of runs of 55 and 54 yards. He finished with 136 yards on nine attempts.

A trio of All-Americans made big plays later in the second as SDSU found paydirt twice in a 27-second span.

Taryn Christion threw a 34-yard TD pass to Cade Johnson. Linebacker Christian Rozebroom picked off a deflected pass soon thereafter. And, one play later, Johnson ran what appeared to be the exact same route and ended up in the end zone for a 42-yard score on another pass from Christion.

Chase Vinatieri added a 45-yard field goal to push the margin to 31-0.

The Bears’ lone TD was a 10-yard TD toss from Peyton Huslig to Tyler Currie.

Christion broke out of the pocket for a 32-yard dash to paydirt just before halftime, making it 38-7 and capping SDSU’s 31-point second period.

Adam Anderson tallied TD catches from Christion of 12 yards in the third quarter and 19 yards in the fourth.

Blair Mulholland plunged in from 30 inches at the 6:47 mark of the fourth to polish off the blowout.

Christion ended up 15-of-28 for 259 yards with four TDs and two INTs.

Logan Backhaus had five tackles and picked off a pass. Ryan Earith made five stops, 2 1/2 which went for a loss (1 1/2 sacks).

Jordan Brown intercepted his third pass of the season – the eighth pick of his career. Jarek Berg added an INT.

Missouri State (4-4, 2-4) is host to North Dakota State on Saturday at 2 p.m.

South Dakota State (6-2, 4-2) takes on last Southern Illinois (2-7, 1-4) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Carbondale, Ill.
