HASTINGS, Neb. – South Dakota State dropped a 1-0 exhibition to the University of Wyoming in a neutral site matchup Friday.
SDSU saw 20 Jackrabbits take the field in the first action of the season and fired four shots on the day, as Kelsi Wipf, Leah Manuleleua, Tori Poole and Julia Lam took aim at the net.
"I thought this game was just what we needed," head coach Brock Thompson said. "This was a chance to play a quality opponent to sharpen our style of play as we move through preseason."
"Coming into the season, we knew that we needed to gain experience in the backline and I thought Kelsi (Wipf), Katie (Zabel), Annie (Williams) and Carina (McLennan) were steady and took a step forward tonight," he said."
Wyoming recorded eight shots on the night, putting four on net with the lone score of the game.
Maggie Smither recorded one save for the Jacks in the first half while Taylor Lock played the final 45 minutes and had two saves.
Neither team took a shot in the opening 12 minutes before Wyoming launched the first attempt of the game, matched two minutes later by Poole, who's shot went high at 14:32 as the Jackrabbits' only shot of the first half.
Scoreless through the opening frame, SDSU threatened early in the second with a shot from Manuleleua just 20 seconds into the period before a pair of corner kick efforts of the next three minutes.
Wyoming broke the stalemate in the 58th with a goal by Grace Collins, and while State pushed for a game-tying goal down the stretch (including an effort from Wipf at 71:06 that went off the post), the Jacks fell short of extending the game past regulation.
