Jenkins buzzer-beater lifts Jackrabbits over Bison

Posted

FARGO, N.D. – David Jenkins kept South Dakota State’s conference championship hopes alive as the Jackrabbits flipped the script on Saturday.

The sophomore sharpshooter banked in a 40-foot runner to lift SDSU to a 78-77 win over North Dakota State at the Scheels Center.

NDSU missed a free throw with less than 4 seconds remaining. Tevin King corralled the rebound and got the ball to Jenkins, who swerved through Bison defenders before letting it fly from just inside midcourt.

Many of the 3,957 in attendance watched in stunned silence after the ball banked through as the clock hit zero and the Jackrabbit bench poured onto the court to celebrate.

That was the only time SDSU led the entire game.

Two days after blowing a 16-point lead and giving up a buzzer-beating jumper in an 85-84 loss at Omaha, the Jackrabbits found themselves in the opposite position versus the Bison.

SDSU was down 39-30 at halftime and trailed by 17 – 52-35 – with 15:54 remaining.

The Jackrabbits cut it to a one-possession game with 7:54 showing on the clock but trailed 74-65 with 2:08 left.

Jenkins hit a contested 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:56 to go.

Skyler Flatten added a pair of free throws with 1:11 left, before Mike Daum connected from deep with 51 seconds to play to cut the deficit to 74-73. King forced a turnover in between.

Vinnie Shahid’s driving layup put the Bison on top 76-73 with 26 seconds to play.

Daum forced up a 3-pointer on the other end, before NDSU’s Tyson Ward missed the front end of a one-and-one. Jenkins was intentionally fouled and made both free throws with 4.5 seconds left.

NDSU’s Rocky Kreuser went 1-of-2 at the stripe with 3.9 seconds to go, leaving the score at 77-75 in favor of the home team.

“It’s been a little more excitement maybe than we were hoping for – having three kids four years and under, I feel like that ages you a lot but these last 48 hours have definitely been rivaling that,” said SDSU coach T.J. Otzelberger of the two-game road trip. “Two high-level games, great atmospheres at both places and we’re fortunate to come out with the win today.”

SDSU (21-7, 11-2) maintained its half-game lead over Omaha (16-9, 10-2), which completed a regular-season sweep of third-place Purdue Fort Wayne (17-11, 9-4) with a 74-71 home victory Saturday, in the Summit League standings. NDSU (14-13, 8-5) is in fourth.

Daum finished with 31 points and 12 rebounds for his 50th career double-double.

Jenkins hit five 3s and scored 24 points. He has 98 3-pointers on the season, breaking Daum’s school record of 96 set last year.

King totaled eight points, seven boards and four assists. Flatten also had eight markers.

NDSU, which had its five-game winning streak snapped, put five players in double figures. Shahid had 19 points, Tyson Ward 14, reserve Tyree Eady 11, and Kreuser and Jared Samuelson 10 apiece.

South Dakota State is host to Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday at 7 p.m. to open a three-game homestand to close out the regular season.

Notes: Daum moved from 13th to 12th in NCAA Division I history with 2,943 career points, passing Loyola Chicago’s Alfredrick Hughes (2,914 from 1981-85). He is eight points behind 11th-place Danny Manning of Kansas and 30 behind 10th-place Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati. Campbell senior Chris Clemons is the active leader, sitting ninth all-time with 3,006 points. … On the NCAA all-divisions list (I, II and III), Daum moved to 27th in career points. … Daum passed Dakota Wesleyan’s Alan Miller (2,920 from 1981-85) for second place on the South Dakota collegiate scoring list. He’s 119 behind Eric Kline. … Daum now has 1,177 career rebounds – 12 off the league record. … Jenkins has 1,101 career points and 182 3-pointers. … NDSU’s last loss was 87-69 at SDSU on Jan. 24.

Jenkins honored by Summit League

SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State’s David Jenkins was announced Monday as Summit League Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week.

He averaged 29 points over two games and also set the school’s single-season 3-point record and tied SDSU’s top mark for 3-pointers in a single game (10) during the Jacks’ final road trip of the year.

This is Jenkins’ first weekly honor of the season and second of his career. He shared the honor this week with Omaha’s Zach Jackson.
