BROOKINGS — A 31-year-old woman was found guilty of rape in the fourth degree by a Brookings County jury on Wednesday.

Courtney Shyne was charged with rape for an incident that occurred on Oct. 7, 2022, in Brookings.

According to State’s Attorney Dan Nelson, who prosecuted the case, the evidence presented at trial showed Shyne engaged in a sexual act with a 15-year-old. The victim filed a report with the Brookings Police Department, which conducted the investigation. The matter was then turned over to the State’s Attorney Office.

Shyne was indicted by a county grand jury and a warrant was issued for her arrest.

“South Dakota protects teenagers who are under the age of consent from perpetrators like Ms. Shyne. I’m appreciative that the jury followed the facts and applied the law in this case. Prosecuting victims of sexual violence remains a top priority in our office and Shyne will now face the consequences of her actions,” Nelson said.

Rape in the fourth degree is a Class 3 felony in South Dakota, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, a $30,000 fine or both.

A sentencing date was set for Oct. 25.
