JV BOYS

Brookings beat Sioux Center 4-0 on Friday at home before picking up a 4-2 road win over Brandon Valley on Sunday.

The Rangers (11-4) sit in third place in the SDAHA standings. They are host to Brandon Valley on Friday, Aberdeen on Saturday and Sioux Falls 1 on Sunday.

• Brookings 4, Sioux Center 0

The Rangers scored two goals in both the first and third periods, while Kaden Gutormson made eight saves to earn the shutout win between the pipes.

Noah Ronning lit the lamp on an assist from Trevor Pederson in the first. Luc Bouchard’s goal made it 2-0.

Carter Merritt netted both goals in the final period – Bouchard assisted on the first and Ronning on the second. 

 Brookings 4, Brandon Valley 2

Nick Jonas scored twice as the Rangers overcame an early deficit to top the Ice Cats.

Jonas scored less than 3 minutes into the game; however, Brandon Valley led 2-1 after a period.

Carter Merritt’s tally – assisted by Jonas – tied things up late in the second.

Kane Kurtenbach notched the go-ahead goal 1:11 into the third. Luc Bouchard was credited with the assist.

Jonas’ second goal, which was assisted by Jacob Drew, provided for the final margin with 8:28 remaining.

Carter Schulz tallied 12 saves in goal.

BANTAM A

Brookings recorded a 3-1 road win over first-place Sioux Falls 2 on Saturday and beat Aberdeen 6-0 in a Sunday home game.

The Rangers (15-1-0-1) enter the final week of the regular season in second place in the SDAHA, one point behind Sioux Falls 2 (16-2-0-0). They are host to Watertown on Friday, Sioux Center on Sautrday and Sioux Falls 1 on Sunday.

 Brookings 3, Sioux Falls 1

Three different Rangers lit the lamp and goalie Kade Brecher came up with 19 saves to secure the victory.

Isaac Schulte’s power-play goal opened the scoring. Breck Hirrschoff assisted.

Brody Powers added a second-period tally, again assisted by Hirrschoff. Brookings led 2-1 after two.

Trenton Pederson provided the visitors with an insurance goal with 5:50 to play in the game.

 Brookings 6, Aberdeen 0

The Rangers used another balanced attack offensively and Kade Brecher recorded nine saves to earn the shutout victory.

Joseph Wu lit the lamp twice. Jack Merritt tallied a goal and a pair of assists.

Breck Hirrschoff and Wu found the back of the net in the opening period, with assists going to Merritt and Isaac Schulte.

Wu, Merritt and Brody Powers added second-period goals to push the margin to 5-0. Zack Struck and Eli Johnson assisted on the first goal, Trenton Pederson on the second and Hirrschoff on the third.

Schulte’s power-play goal in the third provided for the final margin. Merritt and Powers were credited with assists.

BANTAM B

Brookings fell 4-0 at Brandon Valley on Sunday.

The sixth-place Rangers (3-10) close out the regular season playing host to Sioux Falls 2 on Saturday and Sioux Falls 1 on Sunday.

 Brandon Valley 4, Brookings 0

The Ice Cats’ Blake Schneekloth scored twice, Treyson Boesch added a goal and two assists, and Joseph Weber earned the shutout with 12 saves.

Brookings’ Addison Ronning stopped 31 of the 35 shots faced.

PEEWEE A

The Rangers dropped Rushmore 3-1 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday to earn a share of the SDAHA regular-season championship.

Brookings and Aberdeen both finished with 14-2 records. The Rangers won their final 11 league games.

The state tournament is this weekend in Aberdeen. The top-seeded Rangers face Huron in the quarterfinals Friday at 7 p.m.

 Brookings 3, Rushmore 1

Owen Schneider and Jacob Peterson provided a majority of the offense and Egan Jensen made 28 saves to pick up the win in goal.

Peterson scored on an assist from Jacob Kahle in the the second. Schneider added an unassisted tally later in the period to make it 2-0.

Schneider lit the lamp in the third to provide the Rangers with some breathing room. Peterson and Aidan Austreim were credited with assists.

 Brookings 2, Rushmore 1

Owen Schneider scored the game-winning goal with 10:43 remaining.

Egan Jensen stopped 15 shots.

Jacob Kahle lit the lamp in the opening period, with the assist going to Cole Schaller.

The score was tied 1-1 after a period.

PEEWEE B

The Rangers dropped a pair of homes games to Rushmore, falling 5-4 Saturday and 7-1 Sunday.

Brookings went 2-11-1-0 and took eighth in the SDAHA standings.

The state tournament is this weekend in Sioux Center. The Rangers play top-seeded Yankton on Friday at 7 p.m. in a quarterfinal matchup.

PEEWEE C

Brookings fell 12-3 at Mitchell on Saturday and 7-2 to Watertown in a Sunday home game.

The Rangers ended up 1-12-0-1 and finished seventh in the SDAHA standings.

The state tournament is this weekend in Yankton. Brookings takes on the second-seeded hosts in the 5 p.m. quarterfinal Friday.

 Mitchell 12, Brookings 3

Rhys Heiberger and Keygan Peterson scored first-period goals, as the Rangers trailed 3-2. Derrick Eischens had an assist.

The Marlins led 6-3 after two periods.

Cameron Rolli lit the lamp on an assist from Haidin Heesch in the third.

Nathan Brecher made 35 saves.

 Watertown 7, Brookings 2

Rhys Heiberger found the back of the net in the first period and Cameron Rolli scored a goal on assists from Keygan Peterson and Garrett Vanderwal in the third.

The Lakers scored four times in the opening stanza.

Ryder Anderson made 25 saves.

SQUIRT A

The Rangers placed third in the Dakota Premier Classic at Larson Ice Center over the weekend.

Brookings went 2-1 in pool play, beating Worthington, Minn., 5-1 on Friday and Fairmont, Minn., 6-3 on Saturday before dropping a 4-3 decision to Rushmore.

The Rangers defeated Marshall, Minn., 5-4 in the third-place game Sunday.

Sioux Falls topped the Thunder 7-0 in the championship game.

Brookings plays a pair of games at Brandon on Feb. 23 and then has three contests in the Huron Jamboree on Feb. 24.

Pool play

 Brookings 5, Worthington, Minn. 1

Cooper Schneider lit the lamp four times, while Gideon Merhib added a goal and two assists.

Goalie Matthew Bothe made 15 saves.

Schneider scored off an assist from Merhib in the first period. Merhib’s goal in the second made it 2-0.

Schneider tacked on three goals in the final stanza. Connor Buckley and Merhib both picked up an assist.

 Brookings 6, Fairmont, Minn. 3

The Rangers outscored their opponent 3-0 in the final period.

Gideon Merhib notched a hat trick and Parker Nielsen added a pair of goals.

Nielsen and Merhib had unassisted tallies in the opening period. Merhib found the back of the net again in the second.

Tied at 3-3, Nielsen, Merhib and Cooper Schneider each scored in a 4-minute span late in the game – the last goal coming at 2:44. Merhib assisted on Schneider’s goal.

Matthew Bothe stopped 13 shots.

 Rushmore 4, Brookings 3

The Rangers rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie things up with 3:19 remaining in the game; however, the Rangers netted the game-winning goal with 39 seconds showing on the clock.

Rushmore scored three times in the first period.

In the second, Connor Buckley scored on an assist from Cooper Schneider.

Gideon Merhib also scored in the second and netted the equalizer with 3:19 left in the third.

Matthew Bothe made 26 saves.

Third place

 Brookings 5, Marshall, Minn. 4

Gideon Merhib recorded a hat trick and Parker Nielsen found the back of the net twice as the Rangers picked up the victory to place third.

Scoreless after a period, Brookings led 4-3 following a scoring flurry late in the second.

Nielsen got it going with back-to-back goals (4:24 and 3:26). Connor Buckley and Merhib assisted on the second goal.

Merhib scored with 1:26 left in the period and again with 2 seconds to go. Cooper Scheider picked up an assist.

Merhib completed the hat trick with 6:02 to play in the game as Brookings prevailed. Anna Rasmussen assisted on the final goal.

Matthew Bothe finished with 12 saves.

GIRLS 12U

Brookings finished with a 1-2 record to take fourth in the Tracy Rae Jevning Classic hosted by Waseca, Minn.

The Rangers fell 9-0 to the Omaha Lady Jr. Lancers and beat Worthington, Minn., 10-3 in pool-play action Saturday. The host team defeated Brookings 13-1 in the third-place game.

Pool play

 Omaha Lady Jr. Lancers 9, Brookings 0

Omaha scored three goals in each period.

Rorri Quam made 11 saves for the Rangers.

 Brookings 10, Worthington, Minn. 3

The Rangers outscored the Minnesota club 7-0 in the third period.

Brookings was up 1-0 after a period and the score was tied at 3-all through two.

Kinzey Grendler and Graciana Peterson both posted a hat trick while adding one assist.

Payton Triplett, Lily Jorgenson and Miyah Foerster added a goal and an assist apiece.

Brynnlea Peterson also lit the lamp.

Abriana Peterson tallied a pair of assists, with Ava Kahle and Shauna Pederson each adding one.

Rorri Quam 13 saves.

Third place

 Waseca, Minn. 13, Brookings 1

The hosts scored 10 first-period goals.

The Rangers’ Shauna Pederson scored in the third.

Rorri Quam stopped 14 shots.
