JV BOYS
BROOKINGS – The Rangers closed with three more victories, taking the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association regular-season title with an 18-1-1-0 record.
Brookings outscored its opponents a combined 138-20, leading the league in both categories. Rushmore went 17-3.
The state tournament is Friday through Sunday in Fort Pierre.
Friday
• Brookings 3, Sioux Falls 1
The Rangers built a 2-0 lead after a period en route to the victory.
Owen Schneider scored on an assist from Brody Powers 7:17 into the game. Zach Struck lit the lamp 9 seconds later, with the assist going to Kole Kalber.
Kalber found the back of the net again on a power play early in the third. Jack Merritt assisted as Brookings moved ahead 3-0 with 13:52 remaining in the game.
Kaden Gutormson made 19 saves for the win between the pipes.
Saturday
• Brookings 6, Watertown 0
Kalber had another two-goal game, adding an assist
Powers also lit the lamp twice.
Joseph Wu (assist) and Jordan Raatz added goal.
Merritt and Trenton Pederson tallied assists.
Gutormson stopped all six shots he faced for the shutout. Brookings logged 41 shots on goal.
Sunday
• Brookings 5, Sioux Center 0
Kalber (two assists), Raatz (assist), Jacob Drew (assist), Powers and Pederson each lit the lamp.
Wu and Merritt also notched assists.
Gutormson picked up 16 saves for another shutout.
Notes: Kalber and Schneider shared the league-lead with 37 points apiece, both totaling 19 goals and 18 assists. … Pederson scored a league-best 24 goals, adding 11 assists to finish third in points at 35. … Merritt (11/23) was fourth with 34 points. … Gutormson went 15-1-1-0 between the pipes, posting a goals-against average of 1.11 and a save percentage of .930 (239 stops) with eight shutouts.
JV GIRLS
ABERDEEN – The Cougars topped the Rangers 10-2 on Sunday to close the regular season.
Taryn Richter and Maggie Dunbar scored for Brookings.
Richter and Shauna Pederson picked up assists.
Ranger goalie Aletha Baker made 28 saves.
Aberdeen went 11-1 on the season to take the league title.
Brookings ended up with a 3-9 record. There is no state tournament.
BANTAM A
HURON – Brookings placed third in the SDAHA state tournament over the weekend at Bergman Arena.
The second-seeded Rangers went 14-2-1-1 in the regular season.
Fourth-seeded Aberdeen topped third-seeded Sioux Falls 6-4 in the final. No. 1 Rushmore fell 6-0 to the Cougars in the semifinals.
Friday – Quarterfinals
• Brookings 7, Mitchell 1
Jacob Kahle (assist) and Riley Linstad both scored twice to lead the victors.
Ren Jacobsen (assist), Carson Odde and Jacob Law also found the back of the net.
Assists went to Jay Harris, Aidan Austreim and Tre Christopherson.
Goalie Egen Jensen made 18 saves.
Saturday – Semifinals
• Sioux Falls 3, Brookings 0
Trey Salonen made 34 saves and three different Flyers lit the lamp in the victory.
Jensen stopped 21 shots.
Sunday – Third Place
• Brookings 2, Rushmore 1
The Rangers prevailed in the matchup of the top two seeds.
Jacobsen scored the go-ahead tally with 2:32 remaining on assists from Kahle and Chase Karch.
Kahle knotted the score at 1-all 5 minutes prior with assisted being credited to Jacobsen and Deatherage.
Rushmore scored in the first period.
Jensen totaled 23 assists.
BANTAM B
RAPID CITY – The sixth-seeded Rangers took sixth in the SDAHA state tournament at the Thunderdome.
No. 1 Sioux Falls (2) beat No. 3 Brandon Valley 3-1 in the championship.
Friday – Quarterfinals
• Brandon Valley 4, Brookings 2
The eventual-champion Ice Cats used a three-goal middle stanza to beat the Rangers.
Brookings’ Waylon Carroll and Jack Lee lit the lamp.
Andrew Hahn had an assist.
Ryder Anderson made 37 saves.
Saturday – Consolation Semifinals
• Brookings 4, Oahe 3, OT
Derrick Eischens’ power-play goal 4:03 into the extra period lifted the Rangers. Masen Holen assisted.
Lee lit the lamp twice, with Carroll also scoring.
Eischens added an assist.
Brookings scored three times in the middle period as the score was tied at 3-all heading to the third.
Nathan Brecher made 23 saves.
Sunday – Fifth Place
• Rushmore 4, Brookings 1
Holen lit the lamp midway through the first; however, the Thunder’s Mason McGregor scored twice in the second period and Rushmore added a pair of goals in the third.
Anderson stopped 30 shots.
