JV girls suffer first league loss; A Bantams move to second in standings

JUNIOR VARSITY BOYS

The Ranger JV split a pair of South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association league games at Larson Ice Center – beating Yankton, 7-5, on Saturday before losing 4-3 to Mitchell on Sunday – to fall into a fifth-place tie with the Marlins in the standings with 16 points with an 8-3 mark.

Brookings hits the road this weekend for a pair of league matchups – Saturday against Oahe and Sunday at Sioux Falls.

• Rangers 7, Yankton 5

Brookings took control early with three first-period goals on the strength of a 16-3 edge in shots as Riley Jacobsen opened the scoring off an assist from Noah Drew before Joel Syrstad lit the lamp with an unassisted tally. Alec Nielson then scored a power-play goal off assists from Jacobsen and Carter Shoup.

Shoup’s unassisted goal to open the second pushed the Ranger lead to 4-0, but Yankton scored three straight to close within a goal before Nielson notched another unassisted tally to make it 5-3.

The Bucks scored on a power-play to close out the second and then tied the game 3 1/2 minutes into the third before Brookings responded with two unanswered goals for the win. Evan Becher scored the game-winning goal and Peyton Stensgaard added insurance with a power-play tally off an assist from Luc Bouchard for the final margin.

The Rangers outshot Yankton, 34-19, as Philip Kuechenmeister finished with 14 saves.

• Mitchell 4, Rangers 3

Kobe Ischen gave the Rangers the early lead off assists from Jordan Svobodny and Alec Nielson, but the Marlins responded with two goals to lead 2-1 after a period.

Mitchell sandwiched a pair of power-play goals around two Brookings goals as Ischen lit the lamp off a Nielson assist and Stensgaard found the back of the net off a helper from Drew and that ended up being the final as neither team scored in the third.

The Rangers held a 32-15 edge in shots as Kuechenmeister collected 11 saves.

JUNIOR VARSITY GIRLS

The JV Rangers suffered their first league loss of the season as they posted a 2-1 record with wins over Sioux Falls (2-1) and Aberdeen (4-1) before the Cougars came back on Sunday and handed Brookings a 2-1 defeat.

The Rangers lead the standings with a 15-1 record worth 30 points, while Aberdeen is second with 25 points (12-2-0-1) and Sioux Falls sits in third with 22 points with an 11-3 mark.

• Rangers 2, Sioux Falls 1

After a scoreless first period, Addi Ramlo scored midway through the second off an assist from Savannah Barber to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead through two.

Montana Myer pushed the advantage to two goals early in the third as Ramlo and Barber set up the score before the Flyers scored their lone goal eight minutes later for the final margin.

Sioux Falls held a 38-13 advantage in shots as Jadyn Runge came up with 37 saves for the win in goal.

• Rangers 4, Aberdeen 1

Myer tallied all four goals as the Rangers led 1-0 after one and 3-0 through two before the Cougars got on the scoreboard midway through the third.

Jenna Schulte set up Myer’s first-period tally; Ramlo and Barber helped on the first goal in the second; and Ramlo assisted on the third-period goal.

Brookings outshot Aberdeen, 20-18, as Runge finished with 17 saves.

• Aberdeen 2, Rangers 1

The Cougars led 1-0 after a period and pushed their lead to 2-0 early in the third before Schulte found the back of the net to make it 2-1 off assists from Brooklyn Roberts and McKenna Geraets.

The Rangers held a 28-25 advantage in shots as Runge collected 23 saves.

BANTAM A

The Bantam A Rangers swept a pair of league games over the weekend – 3-2 over Sioux Falls West and 9-2 against Watertown – to claim second place in the SDAHA standings with 18 points, courtesy of an 8-3-0-2 record.

Brookings travels to Austin, Minn., for a tournament this weekend.

• Rangers 3, S.F. West 2

Brookings led 2-0 after a period and added its third goal to go up 3-0 and then held on for the win as Tristan VanDeVere scored both first-period goals – the first assisted by Zach Weber and the second set up by Kane Kurtenbach.

Weber tallied the second-period goal as VanDeVere and Charlie Marshall earned the assists before the Fliers got on scoreboard to make it 3-1 through two.

Sioux Falls got within one less than three minutes into the final period, but the Rangers held on despite being outshot 5-1 in the period and 17-11 for the game as Carter Schulz finished with 15 saves for the win in goal.

• Rangers 9, Watertown 2

Brookings notched three goals in the first period; added four more in the second; and then tacked on two in the third to cruise past the Lakers.

Cole Mahlum sandwiched a pair of goals around a Jamison Honkomp unassisted tally as Ike Johnson assisted on the first one, which was on a power play, and Honkomp set up the second as the Rangers led 3-0 after one.

After Watertown tallied a short-handed goal to open the second, Cayden Jacobsma answered off a Mahlum assist, and then, Mahlum notched a hat trick with his third goal of the game with Max Kjelden picking up the assist. Kurtenbach and Kjelden each lit the lamp just 22 seconds apart as VanDeVere and Mahlum earned the respective assists to make it 7-1 through two.

Honkomp and Weber added unassisted goals in the third before the Lakers scored a late goal for the final margin as Schulz collected 20 saves as Brookings held a 32-22 edge in shots.

BANTAM B

The Bantam B Rangers split a pair of league games over the weekend at LIC by shutting out Yankton, 9-0, on Saturday before falling, 5-2, to Sioux Falls on Sunday. Brookings is fifth in the standings with 12 points courtesy of a 6-5 record and travels to Austin, Minn., for a tournament this weekend.

• Rangers 9, Yankton 0

Carter Merritt lit the lamp twice late in the first period as Nick Jonas set up the first goal and Wes Koenig helped on the second as the Rangers led 2-0 after one.

Merritt converted on a power-play opportunity to open the second as Koenig picked up another assist and then they switched roles a minute later as Koenig’s goal gave Brookings a 4-0 edge through two.

Trevor Pederson’s unassisted power-play tally opened the third-period scoring as Merritt added two more goals and Koenig found the back of the net two more times for the final margin. Koenig set up Merritt’s first goal and Noah Ronning assisted on Koenig’s first tally as the Rangers held a 28-23 edge in shots as Kaden Gutormson stopped all 23 Yankton shots for the shutout win.

• Sioux Falls 5, Rangers 2

The Flyers led 2-0 after a period and then added two more goals in the second for a 4-0 advantage before Ronning found the back of the net off a Merritt assist to make it a three-goal game.

Sioux Falls tacked on one more goal in the second to go up 5-1 through two and Merritt lit the lamp with an unassisted goal in the third for the final score.

The Flyers outshot Brookings, 33-26, as Gutormson finished with 28 saves.

PEEWEE A

The PeeWee A Rangers beat Sioux Falls West, 5-0, to improve to 9-1-0-1 and move into second place in the SDAHA standings with 19 points. Brookings travels to Rapid City for a pair of games this weekend to face the undefeated Thunder, who are 12-0 on the season and lead the league with 24 points.

• Rangers 5, S.F. West 0

Logan Bortnem scored an unassisted goal in the first and second periods as Brookings led 2-0 through two.

Ashton Witte netted the puck early in the third off an assist from Bortnem before Talon Richter and Jacob Drew lit the lamp late for the final margin. Drew set up Richter and Witte assisted Drew as the Rangers outshot West, 48-9, with Holden Richardson earning the shutout win with nine saves.

PEEWEE B

The PeeWee B Rangers went 0-3 at the Worthington Tournament with losses to La Crescent, Omaha and Sioux City.

Against La Crescent, the Rangers led 2-1 after a period as Miles Merhib opened the scoring off an assist from Jack Merritt and then Joseph Wu tallied an unassisted goal. But La Crescent rallied with six unanswered goals for the 7-2 win as Kade Brecher came up with 49 saves as La Crescent held a 56-15 edge in shots.

Omaha scored four goals in the first period en route to a 4-0 win over the Rangers as Brecher finished with 36 saves as Brookings was outshot, 40-12.

Against Sioux City, Merhib scored the lone Ranger goal in the 11-1 loss as Jesse Roberts picked up the assist.

The PeeWee B Rangers return to league action with a pair of games on Sunday against the Cougars at the Odde Center in Aberdeen.

SQUIRT A

The Squirt A Rangers posted a 3-0 record on Saturday in Aberdeen with wins over Mitchell (6-1), Oahe (9-1) and Aberdeen Blue (9-1).

The Squirts skate in the Marshall (Minn.) Tournament this weekend.

• Rangers 6, Mitchell 1

Luke Honkomp opened the scoring with an unassisted goal before Jacob Peterson sandwiched a pair of goals around a Chase Karch tally as Brookings led 4-0 after a period. Peterson’s first goal was unassisted; Peterson set up Karch; and Karch returned the favor on Peterson’s second goal.

Owen Schneider netted an unassisted goal to make it 5-0 before Peterson earned a hat trick with his third goal off an assist from Jordan Raatz.

The Marlins had the only goal of the third period as the defensive play of Jacob Law, Ren Jacobsen and David Brink held Mitchell to just nine shots on goal as Addison Ronning came up with eight saves.

• Rangers 9, Oahe 1

Brookings led 6-0 after the first period as Peterson scored first off a Schneider setup before Raatz found the back of the net with an unassisted tally. Schneider lit the lamp with back-to-back goals as Peterson assisted on both, and then, Honkomp netted the puck before Karch closed out the scoring of assists from Schneider and Peterson.

Peterson and Honkomp added second-period goals as Carson Odde and Cooper Deatherage earned the respective assists before Schneider scored an unassisted goal in the third to match a Capital score.

Brookings held a 24-7 edge in shots as Ronning collected six saves.

• Rangers 9, Aberdeen Blue 1

The Rangers put up seven first-period goals and then added one each in the second and third for the eight-goal win.

Aidan Austreim started the scoring onslaught with an unassisted tally before Schneider and Peterson found the back of the net, both unassisted. Honkomp and Peterson took turns lighting the lamp as Jacobsen set up Honkomp’s first goal and Schneider assisted on the second. Karch helped on Jacobson’s second goal of the period and Honkomp set up Peterson’s hat trick goal.

Schneider added his second unassisted goal of the game in the second frame before Peterson tacked on an unassisted goal in the third as Jacob Kahle finished with eight saves as the Rangers outshot Blue, 27-9.

SQUIRT B WHITE

The Squirt B White Rangers went 2-1 on Sunday in Aberdeen as they lost 2-1 to Aberdeen Yellow before bouncing back with a 6-4 win over Watertown Black and a 6-2 win over Watertown Gold.

• Aberdeen Yellow 2, Rangers 1

Neither team scored in the first two periods, but Aberdeen notched two goals in the third to the Rangers’ lone goal by Ashton Voss off an assist from Landon Wingate.

Aberdeen held a 22-20 edge in shots as Brayden Bingham finished with 20 saves.

• Rangers 6, Watertown Black 4

Voss scored an unassisted goal in the first period as Brookings led 1-0 after one.

Tre Christopherson lit the lamp twice in the second as the Rangers let 3-2 through two.

In the third, Cole Schaller sandwiched a pair of goals around Christopherson’s hat-trick tally as Brookings pulled away for the two-goal win.

Black outshot the Rangers, 19-15, but Wyatt Pitsenberger turned back 15 Watertown shots for the win in goal.

• Rangers 6, Watertown Gold 2

Christopherson netted the puck with 9:40 left in the first, but Watertown scored twice to take a 2-1 lead after a period.

Schaller and Gavan Stewart tallied unassisted goals to open the second-period scoring before Christopherson and Schaller scored late to make it 5-2 Rangers through two. Graciana Peterson and Pitsenberger assisted on Christopherson’s goal.

Schaller earned a hat trick with an unassisted goal in the third as Brookings outshot the Lakers, 18-14, with Bingham picking up 12 saves for the win.

SQUIRT B BLUE

The Squirt B Blue Rangers went 1-1-1 on Saturday at the Aberdeen Squirt Jamboree as Brookings opened with a 10-2 win over Mitchell Navy; played Huron to a 7-7 tie; and then dropped a 6-3 decision to Aberdeen Yellow.

• Rangers 10, Mitchell Navy 2

Carter Runge scored two first-period goals off assists from Jamison Hunter and Jack Lee, respectively, as Brookings led 2-1 after one.

The Rangers extended their lead to 6-2 through two as Runge notched two more goals as Riley Linstad assisted on the first and Lee on the second. Haidin Heesch and Linstad both found the back of the net with Andrew Hahn setting up Heesch and Runge helping on Linstad’s tally.

Brookings tacked on four third-period goals for the final margin as Linstad (unassisted), Lee (Runge), Hahn (unassisted) and Runge (Lee) all lit the lamp.

The Rangers held a 25-11 edge in shots as Egan Jensen collected nine saves in the win.

• Rangers 7, Huron 7

Jensen tallied an unassisted goal in the first to spot the Rangers to a 1-0 lead but Huron came back in the second period to go up 5-4 heading into the third.

Linstad and Lee each scored an unassisted goal before Heesch scored off a Jensen assist in the second period.

Wyatt Carlson opened the Brookings scoring in the third with an unassisted tally before Runge and Linstad both lit the lamp with Linstad and Braden Dobesh earning the respective assists.

Charles Malone finished with 14 saves as the Rangers were outshot, 21-16.

• Aberdeen Yellow 6, Rangers 3

Aberdeen built a 3-0 lead after a period; still led 5-3 through two; and then tacked on an insurance goal in the third for the 6-3 win.

Lee scored off a Runge assist in the second for the Rangers before Malone netted the puck, unassisted. Runge finished off the scoring off an assist from Taryn Richter as Yellow outshot Brookings, 32-18, with Jensen stopping 26 Aberdeen shots.
