ELMHURST, Ill. – Rachel King of South Dakota State was tabbed as The Summit League Athlete of the week for her performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational. It is her first career outdoor athlete of the week accolade.

Her personal-best mark 10 minutes, 1.14 seconds resets the school record for the third time in her career.

After nearly breaking the 10-minute barrier, King’s is ranked 21st-best in the world.

“The time was really good for me – breaking a PR by nine (9.57) seconds – but I didn’t break the (10-minute) barrier, which was one of my goals coming into this,” King said. “I was proud of my performance because I got caught in no-man’s land for a little bit but I was able to battle back into it.”

The time is the best in The Summit League by 34.34 seconds and ranks fifth best in the NCAA’s outdoor season performance list.

Last year, the St. Michael, Minn. native recorded the school record in the steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational after sitting at second on the school’s top 10 during the 2016 season.

Then King reset the record two weeks later at the Mt. SAC Relays, trimming her PR down to 10:10.71.

She will compete in the Mt. SAC relays again this year on April 20-21.

As her 2018 track season has progressed, she has reset the four school records (Indoor: Mile, 3,000 and 5,000; Outdoor: 3,000-meter steeplechase) so far this season.

Up Next – King and the Jackrabbits will hold an exhibition meet at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athlete Complex on Saturday, April 7, due to the weather complications.
