Lorraine H. Johnson 98, of Brookings, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017, at United Living Community in Brookings.
Funeral services are at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the time of services at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Lorraine Hevle was born on March 6, 1919, in Irene, the daughter of Gustav O. and Ida Marie (Hinseth) Hevle.
Lorraine grew up on the family farm near Irene and attended the Turkey Valley rural school in Yankton County. She was a graduate of the Irene High School in 1937, where she was active in chorus, glee club, and orchestra. She continued her education at Southern State Teachers College and taught school in rural Yankton County. Lorraine served in the United States Navy from 1943 until she was honorably discharged in 1946. She married Harvey Johnson on Dec. 21, 1944, at Irene. After continuing her education, she taught elementary school in Brookings, South Dakota for 22 years until her retirement in 1981. Harvey died on Nov. 15, 1997.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brookings and was active in church circle and choir. She was also a Sunday school teacher and served on several church boards and committees. She was a member of the Brookings Educational Association, S.D.E.A. and N.E.A and the American Childhood Education International. In addition, Lorraine was a charter member of the Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary society for women educators, and a charter member of the Prairie Waves. Lorraine was a member of the Sons of Norway, the American Legion and the Brookings Area Genealogical Society.
Lorraine is survived by two sons, Dexter Johnson of Rapid City and Brian (Laurie) Johnson of Golden, Colorado; a daughter, Brenda (Tim) Bjorklund of Arlington; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Alma Rollins of Minneapolis; a brother, Gene Hevle (Glenda) of Houston; a sister-in-law, Ruth Hevle of Brookings and one daughter-in-law, Rita Trejo of Ventura, California.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Jeffrey; three sisters, Mildred, Sylvia and Mae and three brothers, Gilman, Orin and Kenneth.
