Lucille G. (Bishop) Boyd, 106, of Brookings and formerly of the Egan area, died April 8, 2017 at United Living Community in Brookings.

Lucille was born August 27, 1910 in Leola, to William K. and Lena Bishop. Lucille began her teaching career in a one room school in Andover. She married James Ervin Boyd on July 11, 1936 at Madison. She also taught at Mitchell Elementary and Egan Elementary where she retired in 1972.

Her love of kids and the excitement of learning continued throughout her life. A 100th birthday celebration of her life long devotion to her family and her dedication to children as an elementary school teacher was held at the family farm in August, 2010.  It was the family farm where Lucille and Ervin shared their love of gardening raising a variety of vegetables and cultivating roses.  But it was those times when grandchildren came for a visit or neighbors stopped by that were even more special.  Lucille was always ready with fresh baked cookies from the oven, lemonade and her signature “egg coffee.”

She is survived by her four children: Tom (Lisa) Boyd, Susan (George) Hoffman, John (Linda) Boyd and James (Jane) Boyd; six grandchildren: Lee (Song) Hoffman, Peggy Sue (Jim) Korson, Shawn Boyd, Megan (Chris) Lester, Brad (Eva) Boyd, Sadie (Devon) Hillstead; 18 great grandchildren: Ryan, Max, Alex, Stephan, Melinda, Kristin, Colin, Gabriel, Caleb, Micah, Talya, James, Alayna, Drew, Abby, Bryce, Kaden, Karsen and two great-great grandchildren, Liam and Ella Sue Rohr.

She was preceded in death by husband James Ervin Boyd, an infant daughter Patty Ann, her parents, and her siblings, Irene Heibel and Vincil C. Bishop.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 14 at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings with a prayer service at 7 pm.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Brookings with internment at Graceland Cemetery, Madison.

Lucille’s family prefers no flowers.  Memorials will be given to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Ervin and Lucille Boyd Scholarship in Agronomy at South Dakota State University.
