Madison sweeps Region 2A titles

FLANDREAU – Madison swept the team titles at the Region 2A Track and Field Meet on Thursday.

The top two finishers in each event along with those meeting the qualifying standards automatically qualify for state.

The Class A State Track and Field Meet begins May 25 at Lyle Hare Stadium in Spearfish and concludes May 26 at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.

Girls

The Bulldogs totaled 197 points, with Hamlin (176) taking second, Sioux Valley (127) third and Flandreau (88) fourth.

Cossack seniors Lynsey Stevens and Nikole Ziegler finished 1-2 in all three jumps.

Stevens posted winning marks of 5 feet, 1 inch in the high jump, 15-8 in the long jump and 34-11 in the triple jump. She had already qualified for state in all three events during the regular season.

Ziegler advanced to state by taking second in the long jump (15-3 1/2) and triple jump (33-9 1/2). She was also second in the high jump (4-11), but had previous qualified in the event. 

Flandreau’s Madeline Hursey qualified in the 3,200-meter run after placing second in 12 minutes, 43.2 seconds.

The Fliers had three relay teams  take second and punch their tickets to state – Isabella Pavlis, Hannah Parsley, Kathy Parsley and Ashtyn Bertram in the 4x200 (1:49.8) and 4x400 (4:21.9); and Madline Hursey, Elizabeth Hursey, Mara Lunday and Hannah Parsley in the 4x800 (10:20.9).

Boys

The Bulldogs racked up 201.5 team points and Hamlin (135.5) ended up second. Sioux Valley (104) took third and Flandreau (98) fifth.

The Cossacks’ Brennan Stoltenberg qualified for state in a pair of events as he won the discus (139-9) and was runner-up in the shot put (44-3 1/2).

Kelton Vincent won the 3,200 in 11:25.9 to advance. Max Nielson added a second-place finish in the 1,600 as he also qualified. Ryan Schuster, Trevor Olson, Jaxton Schiller and Nielson crossed in 4:01.6 in the medley relay to move on.

Lane VanderWal won the triple jump with a mark of 39-0 3/4. He had already qualified in the event.

The Fliers had four individuals qualify for state in addition to a pair of relay teams.

Michael Witte won the 300-meter hurdles in 44.3 seconds.

Placing second were Andrew Julson in the 200 (23.2), Gabe Hobbie in the 3,200 (11:36.5) and Nathan Kneebone in the triple jump (37-10).

Trevor Hahn, Brendan Ten Eyck, Witte and Julson placed second in the 4x200 with a 1:37.7 clocking. Julson, Witte, Connor LeBrun and Ten Eyck crossed in second in the 4x400 in 3:40.
