After graduating Redfield High she attended College in Aberdeen and worked at the Redfield State School where in 1940 she met and married Kenneth Balo, a State Milk Tester. They started a Brown Swiss herd on a farm near White, SD where they raised five daughters to share in the operation and support of a dairy farm. They also sponsored a two generation family of four adult Latvian Refugees through the Lutheran Refugee Placement Service.

She earned her teaching Certificate at NSC in Aberdeen & General Beadle and taught 8 grades in Afton Rural School then Astoria, Bruce, Toronto in South Dakota. Then First Grade in Tec Nos Pas, Arizona. She cherished her students and said her greatest accomplishment in life was teaching children to read.

She was active in the neighborhood, family reunions, 4H, Farmers Union, and The United Methodist Church. Her baking, gardening, canning and work on the farm were exceptional but her passion was sewing.  After moving to near Four Corners to teach, then living in employee housing and working at the Grand Canyon, they settled in Prescott Valley, AZ. Volunteer work included Lioness, Chamber of Commerce, Meals on Wheels, UMW and AARP. She fulfilled a lifelong dream and bought a Quilt Store. They faithfully supported building the Prescott Valley United Methodist Church. Kenneth’s funeral was the first in that new church in 1983.

In 2009 she and Alietha moved to Spearfish to be closer to family.

Survivors are brother Les Pribble, daughters Mary (Cal) Hayenga and Alietha Balo all of Spearfish; Ruth (Al) Wentzy, The Villages, FL; Betty (Ray) Hults, Roland, IA; Alietha Balo, Spearfish, SD; Beverly (Dave) Erickson, Pelican Rapids, MN; 10 grandchildren, 19 Great grands; 3 Great-great grands;  many family members and friends.
