Marlys Rae Ohlsen, 85, of Volga and a former Arlington area resident died Monday, May 13, 2019, at the Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings.

Marlys was born on March 6, 1934, in Bruce, to Helmer and Helen (Friedel) Frykman.  She grew up on a farm north of Arlington. Marlys attended country school and graduated from Arlington High School in 1952.  She married Jack Shearer on February 27, 1954.  Jack passed away in 1964.  She married Thomas Ohlsen on February 19, 1972.  They enjoyed 32 years together until Tom’s passing on October 11, 2004.

Marlys spent most of her life in Arlington.  She worked at the Bob Allen Company in Arlington and Madison for 17 years.

Marlys enjoyed growing flowers, decorating and watching her favorite soap operas, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.  She was meticulous in everything she did and was not shy to tell you how it should be done!

She moved to Volga,  10 years ago to be by her daughter.

She enjoyed visits with her family and collecting angels.

She loved her Volga home and planned to return after a short rehab stay at the Neighborhoods in March. Unfortunately, her dream to return to her home never materialized due to her untimely death.

Marlys is survived by her four children; Sheryl (Jerry) Moad of Brookings, Debbie (Bruce) Briggs of Surprise, AZ, Lori (Donald) Doescher of Volga and Scott (Lisa) Shearer of Brookings; four step children; Robert (Wilma) Ohlsen of White, Rick (Sheila) Ohlsen of Brookings, Becky (Joe) Brown of Ramona and Greg (RaeMarie) Ohlsen of New River, AZ, four grandchildren; Jody Moad of Brookings, Justin (Lacey) Doescher of Bruce, Ashley Doescher of Sioux Falls and Brady (Cassandra) Briggs of Hutchinson, MN.  Great-Grandchildren; Sophia, Harrison and Hudson Doescher, Kylie (Matt) Johnson, Jesse Hakinson, Great-Great-Granddaughter, Olivia Johnson, her brother Gary (Dee) Frykman of Gardners, PA.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Jack and Tom.

Upon Marlys’s wish private service will be held with family.

The Johnson-Henry Funeral Home of Arlington is in charge of arrangements.
