Milford Ray Cheeseman, Dutch or M. R. to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2017. He was born in Madison, SD on Oct. 16, 1926. Dutch lived a long and happy life.
Dutch’s early years were spent in Huron, where he met and in 1952 married the love of his life, Patricia Ruth Mutch Cheeseman to whom he was wed for 60 years.
His three daughters were all born in Huron. Dutch and his brothers owned Cheeseman Brothers Construction and did road contracting for many years. Dutch was hired as the Beadle County highway superintendent and in 1965 moved to Brookings to become Brookings County highway superintendent until his retirement in 1988.
After retirement, Dutch and Pat traveled the country and eventually moved to The Villages in Lady Lake, Fla. A resident of The Villages for 17 years until 2014, Dutch loved golfing several times per week and being a member of the Polo Booster club. He was an avid life-long golfer with 9 documented hole-in-ones. Dutch was also a member of the Villages Flyers, an active rock hound and amateur jewelry designer and accomplished landscape painter. In addition, his interests included travel, camping, hunting and fishing.
Milford Cheeseman is survived by his daughters Rosanne Cheeseman (James Van Deurzen) of Mazomanie, Wis., Ruth Leonard (Jeff) of Boise, Idaho, and Barbara Swartos (Tim) of Sacramento, Calif. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Stephanie Leonard, Rebecca Leonard, Brooke Mullett Ponce (Alex), Andrew Mullett (Sarah) and Katrina Swartos; four great grandchildren, Sunday Ponce, Gavin Ponce, Tristan Mullett and Wyatt Mullett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vere A. Cheeseman and Anna H. Balster Cheeseman; brothers Robert V. Cheeseman and Duane E. Cheeseman.
The family would like to thank the staff of Matthews of Pewaukee (WI), Matthews of Hartland and Serenity Hospice for their thoughtful care. Memorials may be made in care of Serenity Hospice, Germantown, Wis., in his name.
Inurnment will be at Bushnell National Cemetery in Florida on Aug. 11 , 2017. A private memorial will be held with the family at a later date.
