Myrtle Mae Sass, 93, of Garretson, died Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Church of Garretson with burial in Rosendal Cemetery in Sherman.
Myrtle was born five minutes after her identical twin sister Mildred, to August and Hortense (Conrad) Peterson on Dec. 29, 1923, on the family farm north of Jasper, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jasper and graduated from District 53 and Pipestone High School.
On Dec. 29, 1943, she married to Delbert “Red” Sass and they farmed most of their lives near Sherman and Garretson. They retired from farming and moved into Garretson in 1977 where they continued to be a very active part of the community.
They were members of the Church of Christ of Garretson, Red served as janitor/carpenter and Myrt was active in church and community womens’ groups. Myrtle was an amazing cook, baker and seamstress, she also enjoyed gardening, traveling, coffee with friends and family gatherings with her large extended family. She loved animals, especially her favorite cat Nuisance. Later, she worked as a nurse’s aide at the Palisade Nursing Home until her late 70s and was honored as Employee of the Month.
Myrtle is survived by her sisters Juanita Johnston of Overland Park, Kansas, Irene Schalow of Pipestone, Minnesota and Bernice Alexander of Alexandria, Virginia; 35 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Delbert in 2005; four sisters, Eloise Mitchell, Dorothy Weets, Irma Gehrels and identical twin sister Mildred Witte, one brother Carl Peterson, two nieces Beverly and Barbara Schalow, nephews Don, Doug and Ken Mitchell, Bob Schalow, and Gary Weets.
Myrtle was cared for by the staff at both Orchard Hills Assisted Living and Dells Nursing and Rehab, both of Dell Rapids.
