LAWRENCE, Kan. – South Dakota State big man Mike Daum told the media after the game that playing in storied Phog Allen Fieldhouse against a program with the history of Kansas was a nonfactor coming into Friday night’s game.

Well, the 2017 version of the Jayhawks put on a basketball clinic, and unfortunately for the Jacks, they were on the receiving end of the aforementioned clinic to the tune of a 98-64 setback.

Kansas built an 11-2 lead over the first 3 1/2 minutes before Daum scored on a driving layup.

From there, three different Jayhawks knocked down three straight 3-pointers to push the margin to 16 points – 20-4 – with 15:10 on the clock as the Fieldhouse started rocking from the 16,300 fans.

SDSU quieted the crowd momentarily with an 8-0 run as Daum converted on an old-fashioned three-point play; Reed Tellinghuisen scored in the lane; and then David Jenkins, Jr. drained a 3 to make it 20-12 with 13:17 left.

But then Kansas went on a 37-16 run over the rest of the first half as they shot 63.6 percent from the floor – 21-of-33 – which included a 7-of-14 performance from downtown to lead 57-28 at the break.

The Jayhawks also scored 15 points off turnovers as SDSU coughed up the ball eight times while the home team didn’t turn the ball over in the first half.

Meanwhile, the Jacks were 8-of-28 (28.6 percent) from the field and 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from the beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes.

Kansas pushed the margin past 30 points with the first bucket of the second half and the lead ballooned to 36 points on two different occasions – a dunk by Udoka Azubuike off a fastbreak with 6:25 remaining, and then again on Lagerald Vick’s layup with 2:38 left.

Daum continued his torrid offensive pace with 21 points, to go along with 11 rebounds as SDSU (3-1) lost for the first time this season.

Tevin King added 12 points and eight boards while Jenkins came off the bench to contribute 10 points and Chris Howell and Tellinghuisen chipped in with seven apiece.

Svi Mykhailiuk led the Jayhawks, 3-0, with 27 points, while Vick tacked on 22; Azubuike tallied 17; and Malik Newman had 13.

Game Notes (From SDSU SID): SDSU is now 0-3 all-time against the Jayhawks. … Daum recorded his 66th career game in double figures and 25th 20-point scoring effort. … Daum now has 14 career double-doubles. … Daum (1,481) sits ninth in career points as a Jackrabbit, seven shy of matching Don Jacobsen (1958-61; 1,488) for the eighth spot. … Jenkins has reached double figures in the first four games of his collegiate career. He is the first freshman to do so since Steve Holdren in 2004-05. Holdren scored in double figures the first five games of his career.

The Jackrabbits play three games in the Cayman Islands Classic, starting Monday when they face Wyoming in a 1:30 p.m. contest.
