Oral Roberts, North Dakota State win Summit opening-round games

TULSA, Okla. – Top-seeded Oral Roberts defeated No. 4 South Dakota State by 13-8 in Wednesday’s second game at J.L. Johnson Stadium. The start of the game was delayed two hours and 35 minutes due to severe weather in the Tulsa area.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning, Oral Roberts loaded the bases on a single and pair of walks. Following a pair of strikeouts by South Dakota State starter Brady Stoever, Cal Hernandez smacked a three-RBI double down the third base line. On the very next pitch, Summit League Player of the Year Noah Cummings belted a two-run home run to give the Golden Eagles a 6-1 lead it would never relinquish.

South Dakota State tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on a pair of singles by Newt Johnson and Gus Steiger. Oral Roberts added a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-3 lead.

A pair of singles and doubles by the Jackrabbits in the fourth inning made it a 10-5 Golden Eagle lead.

Oral Roberts would add a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the seventh pushing its lead to 13-6 before South Dakota State answered back with two runs in the eighth.

Cal Hernandez and Nick Roark led ORU with three hits apiece, while Tony Kjolsing, Newt Johnson and Skyler Wenninger each had three hits for SDSU.

Colton Larkins (3-1) got the win for Oral Roberts, while Brady Stoever (3-2) suffered the loss for South Dakota State.

Turning Point

A bases-clearing two-out double down the left field line by Oral Roberts’ Cal Hernandez broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second. On the very next pitch, Noah Cummings belted a two-run homer to left field to make it a 6-1 Golden Eagles lead after two innings.

TULSA, Okla. – No. 3 North Dakota State defeated No. 2 Western Illinois by a 2-0 score behind a complete game one-hitter by Blake Stockert Wednesday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.

The first three innings were a pitchers’ duel between Stockert and Western Illinois starter Ryan Dunne.

North Dakota State scratched across the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning as Matt Elsenpeter scored Carter Thompson on a sacrifice fly. Thompson led off the inning with a single to extend his hitting streak to 14-straight games.

In the sixth inning, Thompson drove in the second Bison run as he plated Jayse McLean on a single to right center field.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Western Illinois challenged North Dakota state third baseman Matt Elsenpeter. The senior recorded all three outs, including his second diving stop of the game.

Deion Thompson collected the lone Western Illinois hit of the game in the eighth inning.

Stockert (5-3) and Dunne (4-7) both collected five strikeouts on the mound.
