Rangers close with two wins

BROOKINGS – The Ranger boys wrapped up South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association regular-season play with a pair of wins over the weekend at Larson Ice Center.

Brookings (13-3-2-0), which finished in third place in the standings, beat Aberdeen 5-0 on Sunday after dropping Huron 3-2 on Saturday.

The state tournament is Friday, March 9 through Sunday, March 11, in Fort Pierre.

Sunday

 Brookings 5, Aberdeen 0

Max Kjelden and Alec Nielson both lit the lamp twice and Tristian Hokenson made seven saves to earn the shutout win in goal as the Rangers rolled to the victory.

Kjelden scored on assists from Jack McCarty and Kobe Ischen in the first period.

Trevor Kuechenmeister took advantage of a power play with a goal early in the second. Matthew Chapin and Kurt Gutormson assisted.

Kjelden’s second tally – an unassisted goal – made it 3-0 midway through the second.

Nielson scored with 14:09 remaining in the game and again with 11:09 to go to provide for the fi-nal margin. Brandin Heesch had an assist.

The Cougars’ Landon Danielson stopped 49 shots in the loss.

Saturday

 Brookings 3, Huron 2

The Rangers scored three times in the first period and then held off the All Stars for the victory.

Trevor Kuechenmeister lit the lamp on assists from Matthew Chapin and Jamison Honkomp 2 1/2 minutes into the game.

Alec Rice added a goal with 6:38 remaining in the period and Maxwell Kjelden scored 24 seconds later to make it 3-0. Jack McCarty assisted on both tallies.

Huron’s Xavier Erickson found the back of the net with 1 second left in the second period. Walker Schiltz’s short-handed goal pulled the All Stars within 3-2 with 2:06 to go in the game. Erickson was credited with the assist.

Dylan Geraets made 14 saves to earn the win in goal. Huron’s Jacob Wehde stopped 39 shots.
