Rangers finish fourth at Dakota Premier Classic

BROOKINGS – St. Vital avenged an earlier pool-play loss with a 3-2 win over the Aberdeen Cougars in Sunday’s championship game of the Dakota Premier Classic U19 Girls’ Tournament at Larson Ice Center.

The Rangers fell to Omaha, 4-2, in the third-place game.

After losing to St. Vital, 3-2, on Friday night, Brookings advanced to medal play with pool-play wins over Omaha (4-3), Osseo-Maple Grove (6-1) and White Bear Lake (10-0).

The Rangers finish up league play on the road this weekend – playing at Sioux Center on Friday and Saturday before traveling to Mitchell on Sunday.

Third-Place Game

• Omaha 4, Rangers 2

The Lancers scored twice in the first period – at the 11:15 mark and again with 3:46 to play – before Klara Beinhorn sent the game into the first intermission, 2-1, as the senior forward scored with 44 seconds left off an assist from Jadyn Peterson.

Beinhorn found the back of the net with 9:31 to play in the second period to tie the game as Bethany Rennich picked up the helper, but Omaha came back to 3 1/2 minutes later with a goal for a 3-2 advantage heading into the third.

The Lancers added an insurance goal with 1:23 to play to earn the bronze as Jadyn Runge stopped 17 of the 21 shots she faced in goal for the Rangers.

Pool-Play Games

• Rangers 4, Omaha 3

Jordyn Peterson scored less than four minutes into the game off an assist from Brooklyn Roberts before Jadyn Peterson pushed the Ranger lead to two goals with 2:53 left in the period as Beinhorn earned the assist. But Omaha answered with two goals in 2 1/2 minutes to tie the game heading into the second period.

Jadyn Peterson lit the lamp with 5:31 to play in the second as Karlie Kruse set up the goal and then, Beinhorn netted the puck just 24 seconds into the third off an assist from Jadyn Peterson to make it 4-2.

The Lancers scored with 5:30 left in the game to get within a goal but it wasn’t enough as Runge collected 22 saves in the win.

• Rangers 6, OMG 1

Brookings scored a pair of goals in the first period and then added two more in the second to build a 4-0 lead before Osseo-Maple Grove got on the scoreboard.

Jordyn Peterson tallied an unassisted goal less than a minute into play before Beinhorn made it 2-0 after one as Jadyn Peterson picked up the assist.

Rennich notched back-to-back goals to open the second – with Roberts and Jordyn Peterson helping on the first and Montana Myer setting up the second – to push the Rangers’ lead to four goals.

After OMG scored with 9:04 left in the second, Kruse lit the lamp off a Rennich assist to send the game into the final period, 5-1, for the Rangers.

Myer tacked on the final goal with 12:09 to play as Rennich earned her second assist.

The Rangers held a 49-12 edge in shots as Runge notched 11 saves in the win.

• Rangers 10, WBL 0

Brookings scored twice in the first and once in the second before tacking on seven third-period goals in the rout of White Bear Lake.

Beinhorn found the back of the net three minutes into play off a Jadyn Peterson assist and the two exchanged roles 1 1/2 minutes later for the 2-0 lead.

Rennich scored the lone goal of the second period as Beinhorn and Jordyn Peterson picked up assists, and then, Brookings scored early – and often – in the third.

Savannah Barber started the scoring with an unassisted tally before Rennich scored off another Jordyn Peterson setup. Jadyn Peterson lit the lamp with the assist going to Kruse, and then Beinhorn and Jordyn Peterson both netted the puck as Jadyn Peterson assisted on both goals. Rennich tallied an unassisted goal before Beinhorn closed the scoring off assists from Rennich and Jordyn Peterson.

Runge stopped all 10 White Bear Lake shots for the shutout win in goal as the Rangers fired 62 shots on net.
