BROOKINGS – The streak is over.

Katie Vockler set up Chloe Harbaugh for an overtime goal that lifted Sioux Falls to a 5-4 sudden-death overtime win over Aberdeen in Sunday’s championship game of the Girls’ Varsity State Tournament at Larson Ice Center.

The Cougars, winners of four straight state titles, battled back from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the game in the third period and force the extra time.

The Flyers got on the scoreboard first when Alexa Christie scored off a Gaby Schroder assist 5 1/2 minutes into the game.

Grace Halvorson lit the lamp with an unassisted tally 2 minutes later to make it 2-0, Sioux Falls.

Aberdeen’s Kaitlyn Holland scored an unassisted goal with 7:56 left in the period, but Vockler found the back of the net just 22 seconds later off a Harbaugh helper to give the Flyers a 3-1 advantage.

With 3:49 on the clock, Harbaugh cashed in on a power-play opportunity with the Flyers’ second unassisted goal to make it 4-1.

But the Cougars didn’t win 16 league games against no losses this season by chance as they answered with two quicks goals – both by Hailey Holland.

The first tickled the twine just 13 seconds after the Flyers’ fourth goal with Kensington Eckhoff and Kaitlyn Holland picking up the assists; and the second, 36 seconds later, as Kaitlyn Holland earned another assist to make it 4-3 after a period.

Despite outshooting Sioux Falls, 12-2, in the second period, the Cougars couldn’t get one past Ava Krabbenhoft as neither team lit the lamp.

Midway through the third, Kaitlyn Holland one-timed an Eckhoff pass for a goal that tied the game at 4-4, eventually sending it into extra time.

Aberdeen held a 36-22 advantage in shots as Krabbenhoft finished with 32 saves for the win. Shelby Snow stopped 17 of the Flyers’ shots in the loss.

Saturday’s Championship Semifinals

• Aberdeen 7, Brookings 2

The Rangers stayed with Aberdeen for the first 21 minutes but the Cougars’ speed triumphed in the end for the 7-2 win to advance to Sunday’s title tilt.

“We came out there, and how we played Aberdeen the way we did; we were even into the third period – we gave up a couple at the end of that game – but the score didn’t indicate what the game was with Aberdeen,” said Ranger head coach Austin Koenig. “At the same time, I told the girls that they had to take it as a life lesson, as well.

“Sports can give you some of the biggest life lessons you can ever have – I told the girls that they can work as hard as they want, and you can’t get what you want in life all of the time – and that’s what happened.

“They worked their butts off all weekend and they came up short score-wise, but at the end of the day, if you can look at yourself and say, ‘I gave it all I had, every shift that I had, then you won.’”

Haiden Stoltenburg opened the scoring for the Cougars less than 3 minutes into play before Kensington Eckhoff cashed in on a power-play opportunity with 5:39 left as Kaitlyn Holland had the first assist and Hailey Holland the second.

The Rangers capitalized on a power-play chance when Jadyn Peterson lit the lamp off a Savannah Barber setup to make it 2-1, but Hailey Holland scored 12 seconds later off a Kaitlyn Holland helper to give Aberdeen a 3-1 lead after one.

In the second period, Brookings pulled within 3-2 on Emma Rice’s blast from the blue line with 12:50 on the clock on a power play, with the assist going to Peterson.

Less than 2 minutes later, Kensington Eckhoff netted the puck with an unassisted goal, and then, Kaitlyn Holland scored on a power-play opportunity with 8:09 to play in the period off an Eckhoff setup to give the Cougars a 5-2 lead through two.

Aberdeen tacked on two more goals in the final frame when Morgan Dean scored off Estelle Harrison’s assist with 4:53 to play. Kaitlyn Holland provided for the final margin with 3:27 on the clock with another power-play goal as Eckhoff earned another assist.

The Cougars held a 36-21 edge in shots as Gerstner stopped 29 Aberdeen attempts in the loss. Snow finished with 19 saves for the win.
