Rangers go 2-2 at Wayzata Tournament

WAYZATA, Minn. – The Rangers posted a 2-2 mark over the weekend at the Wayzata Junior Gold Tournament.

Brookings opened play on Friday night with a 4-1 loss to White Bear Lake before bouncing back with a pair of wins on Saturday – 3-1 over St. Louis Park, 3-1, and then 3-2 over Minnetonka. But the Rangers lost a rematch with Minnetonka on Sunday morning by a 4-2 score.

Brookings returns to South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association play Feb. 3, in Sioux Center.

• White Bear Lake 4, Brookings 1

White Bear Lake scored once in each period to build a 3-0 lead before the Rangers finally found the back of the net in the third on Matt Chapin’s goal off assists from Carter Shoup and Cody Niklason.

• Brookings 3, St. Louis Park 1

Dominic Dobesh tallied a first-period goal as Mason Gerstner and Brandin Heesch earned assists as the Rangers led 1-0 after one.

Brookings built its lead to 2-0 early when Austin Lesnar tallied an unassisted goal before St. Louis Park scored to make it 2-1 through two.

Alec Nielson added an insurance goal for the Rangers early in the third, with the assists going to Max Kjelden and Kobe Ischen.

• Brookings 3, Minnetonka 2

Minnetonka lit the lamp twice before the Rangers got on the scoreboard on a power-play goal by Nielson as Trevor Kuechenmeister earned the assist.

Dobesh scored early in the third off an assist from Heesch as the game was tied at 2-2 heading in the final frame.

Niklason found the back of the net late in the game as Chapin and Kurt Gutormson were credited with the helpers.

• Minnetonka 4, Brookings 2

Minnetonka scored three times in the first period to take control before Dobesh lit the lamp in the second off a Gerstner assist to make it 3-1 through two.

The Rangers closed within a goal at 3-2 when Niklason netted an unassisted tally, but the Minnesota squad added an insurance goal with 45 seconds to play for the final margin.
