Red Hawks, Vikings win Region 3B crowns

ESTELLINE – The Estelline/Hendricks girls and James Valley Christian boys took home the team titles at the Region 3B Track and Field Meet.

The top two finishers in each event along with those meeting the qualifying standards automatically qualify for state.

The Class B State Track and Field Meet is May 25-26 at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.

Girls

Estelline/Hendricks racked up 176 points to edge Deubrook Area (167). Wolsey-Wessington (90) finished third. Lake Preston (74) was fourth and Arlington (52) sixth.

The Red Hawks won four events, including Sophie Johnson taking first in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.17 seconds to qualify for state.

Kaytlyn Hawley won the shot put with a heave of 36 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Kaylee Johnson cleared 4-11 to take the high jump title. Greta Johnson won the pole vault at 10-3. All three individuals had already qualified for state.

Tiffany Vohlken placed second and qualified for state in the shot put (34-5) and discus (113-5). Kylie Beare ended up second in the 400 (1:04.48) to advance.

Greta Johnson, Sophie Johnson, Marissa Golas and Cora Hofer teamed to take second in the 4x100 in 53.86 to qualify.

Also placing second were Greta Johnson in the long jump (15-7) and Sophie Johnson in the pole vault (9-9). Both previously qualified.

The Dolphins’ Andrea Vandermeer advanced in the 1,600 (5:46.26) and 3,200 (12:49.94) by winning both events. Cortney Bauman’s time of 49.42 in the 300-meter hurdles was fast enough for the win as she advanced to state.

Shaylee DeBeer broke the meet record in the triple jump with a mark of 35-3 and also won the 800. Ashley Vandermeer was champion in the 200 (27.22) and long jump, while adding a runner-up showing in the triple jump (34-7). Both had already qualified in their respective events.

Trixie Jo Schlechter (100; 12.89) and Ellie Olsen (1,500; 5:50.77) were second-place finishers and qualified for state in the process. Josie Olsen (12:51.91) was runner-up in the 3,200, an event she’s already qualified in.

Bauman, DeBeer, Josie Olsen and Ashley Vandermeer won the 4x400-meter relay in 4:18.2. DeBeer, Joeve Krier, Bauman and Josie Olsen added a victory in the 4x800 with a 10:19.63 clocking. Deubrook qualified in season in both relays.

The Divers’ Ashley Neely won the 400 in 1:03.05 to qualify. Rylie Brown won the 100 (12.4) and took second in the 200 (27.69) – she had previously qualified in both events.

Brown, Ashlyn DeKnikker, Lindsay Hillestad and Neely won the 4x100 in 53.04 and the 4x200 with a 1:50 clocking – they hadn’t yet qualified in the 4x100 entering the region meet. DeKnikker, Hillestad, Neely and Madison Perkins also prevailed in the medley relay in 4:37.35, but qualified in the event earlier in the year.

The Cardinals’ Hadley Carlson advanced in the high jump, taking second after clearing 4-10.

Boys

The Vikings totaled 161 points to cruise to the title, as Castlewood (82) was second and De Smet (81) third. Deubrook Area (65) finished fourth, Arlington and Lake Preston tied for sixth at 58, and  Estelline/Hendricks (54) ended up eighth.

The Dolphins’ Jacob Johnson won both the 110 hurdles (16.55) and 300 hurdles (44.95) to qualify for state in both events. Teammate Clayton Koppatschek advanced in the 100 by taking second in 11.39.

The Cardinals’ Gavin Holland placed first in the 100 with an 11.32-second clocking. Will Parry was second in the high jump, clearing 5-6, as he also qualified.

Holland, Darrian Hood, Ryan Wager and Zach Zuccaro punched their tickets in the 4x100, taking second in 48.07.

The Divers’ Jasper Denison moved on in the high jump, winning the event at 5-8.
