MADISON – Castlewood downed Deubrook Area and De Smet defeated Arlington in the Region 3B semifinals on Thursday night in Madison to secure berths in next Thursday’s SoDak 16.

The Warriors built a 23-point lead early in the second half and then held off a late Dolphins’ surge for a 55-41 win while the Lady Bulldogs held the Cardinals scoreless in the second quarter on the way to a 59-27 win.

The Warriors led 15-10 after the first quarter with Shaylee DeBeer scoring all 10 of the Dolphins’ points in the opening 8 minutes.

Castlewood extended its margin to 15 points at halftime, 32-17, before putting together an 11-3 run over the first 4 minutes of the second half, capped off by Alayna Benike’s 3-pointer with 3:53 on the clock.

Deubrook got it back within 16 points following a DeBeer free throw, but Benike drilled another trey to give the Warriors a 46-27 edge heading into the final frame.

The Dolphins rallied to open the fourth when Mattie Nepodal knocked down a 3-pointer; Ashley Vandermeer hit two treys; and then, Dre Vandermeer hit a basket to pull Deubrook Area within 12, 50-38, with 4:52 to play.

Benike stopped the run with a pair of free throws; followed those up by a basket; and then, added another free throw to make it 55-38 at the 3:30 mark.

Nepodal nailed another trey with 1:37 left for the final margin.

Benike posted a double-double with game-highs of 30 points and 14 rebounds, to go along with six assists, three blocks and a steal as Castlewood improved to 12-7.

Cala Hunter added 14 points, 10 boards, three assists, a block and a takeaway while Maddie Horn finished with 11 points and four dimes to complete the Warriors’ scoring.

DeBeer notched 18 points, four rebounds, three steals and a dime for the Dolphins, who ended their season with a 16-5 mark. Ashley Vandermeer chipped in with eight points, five blocks and a pair of steals, while Nepodal contributed seven points, a blocked shot and a team-high six boards.

“Shay came out ready – she played well early – we just couldn’t get a couple of buckets to go down early with a couple of other kids,” said Dolphin head coach Brad DeBeer. “We had shots and if those go down, all of a sudden attitudes change and you play a little harder on defense – it just didn’t work out that way and we had a big hole to come out of.

“The kids never quit; they dug in, we got it back to 12 and had a chance later to get it to 11, but a 3 rimmed out and who knows what happens if you get it to 11. It was just one of those nights, when you’re playing from behind you have to use so much energy and it’s a long ways back.

“Benike is going to get hers – she’s that good – she’s just one of the best players in Class B, so she gets her 22-25, even 30 – great – but when you give up another 25 to two other players, now you’re playing from behind, and that’s what happened to us.”

Castlewood received the No. 13 seed and plays fourth-seeded Corsica-Stickney on Thursday night at a neutral site to be determined.
