Rodney M. Murfield, 101, of Brookings, died Monday, July 2, 2018, at the Brookings hospital.
Funeral services are at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Volga. Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Rodney M. Murfield was born on Sept. 26, 1916, in Brookings, the son of Gilbert and Erhmel (Robinson) Murfield. Rodney attended school in Afton Dist. No. 13 in Brookings County and graduated from Brookings High School in 1934.
He married Marjorie Quissel on Nov. 13, 1937, in Flandreau. After their marriage, they lived in Sioux City, Iowa, for one year, before moving to a farm in Afton Township, in Brookings County. They farmed from 1944 until his retirement in 1977. Marjorie died on Feb. 21, 1995, in Brookings. Rodney married Edith Thompson on July 18, 1996, in Volga. Edith died on May 11, 2009.
Rodney was a member of First Lutheran Church in Volga, the Golden K, the Volga Lions Club and the National Farmers Organization since 1962.
He especially enjoyed hunting, shooting his last elk at the age of 93.
Rodney is survived by his son Gary (Cheryl) Murfield of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two wives, two brothers, Delmar and Kermit, and one sister, Thelma.
