Schoon named Most Outstanding Wrestler

HAWARDEN, Iowa – Brookings Junior Jacob Schoon won the West Sioux Invite for the fifth year in a row, earning Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in the process, as the Bobcats placed fourth in the team standings.

Central Lyon/George-Little Rock had 237 points to win the team title. West Sioux (198) was second and Spencer (163.5) third. Brookings had 139.5 points in fourth.

Sam Lehman and Nolan Archer also won titles.

Schoon was again dominant, posting two pins and a technical fall after receiving a first-round bye in the 170-pound weight class.

He dropped Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Jacob Murphy in 2:25 in the quarterfinals and finished CLGLR’s Dylan Winkel in 4 minutes with a 16-0 technical fall.

Schoon put West Sioux’s Neddy Montes on his back in 1:23 in the final.

Lehman, sidelined since early December, returned in style.

He pinned Lincoln’s Freddy Sanchez in 3:17 in the quarterfinals and majored West Sioux’s Brandon Schuller 9-0 in the semifinals at 138 pounds.

Lehman handled Spencer’s Chris Gross, 9-2, in the championship bout.

Archer, at 106, recorded a 5-1 decision versus Lincoln’s Alex Mentzer. He handled Moc-Floyd-Valley’s Johnny Hua in the semis, 16-3.

Archer toppled CLGLR’s Cody Kramer 7-3 to polish off the title run.

Connor Klinkhammer (113 pounds) and Cole Loiseau (152) both posted runner-up finishes.

Klinkhammer beat LeMars’ Jason Hand 10-3 in the quarter and pinned Spencer’s Bryson Blair in 1:36 in the semis.

West Sioux’s Adam Allard pinned Klinkhammer in 3:04 in the title matchup.

Loiseau picked up three wins to reach the final, pinning West Sioux’s Jeshua Vervantes in 3:08 and Spencer’s Titan Coleman in 3:12 before picking up a 6-0 decision against Hinton’s Teegan Tschampel in the semifinals.

Western Christian’s Tristan Mulder pinned Loiseau in 1:55 in the championship.

Jaxon Bowes (120) and Logan Bowes (160) both ended up fourth.

Jaxon advanced to the semis via back-to-back byes but then fell 12-2 to Lincoln’s Beau Beavers and lost by fall in 2:59 to West Sioux’s Dillon Lynott in the third-place match.

Bowes posted an 11-4 quarterfinal win over LeMars’ Myles Kass. He was pinned by Moc-Floyd Valley’s Logan Koedam in 1:40 in the semifinals and then lost 5-2 to Spencer’s Brody Kacmarynski.

Gavin Klinkhammer (106) took sixth and Jacob Montis (132) seventh. 

Klinkhammer opened with a 7-2 win over West Sioux’s Luis Ramirez but fell 5-1 to Spencer’s Case Cauthron. He topped LeMar’s Blake Dirksen 6-3 in a consolation semi but was pinned by Mentzer in 1:13 in the fifth-place match.

Monthis fell in 1:18 versus CLGLR’s Gable Sieperda in the quarters and later got pinned by Ridge View’s Gary Baughn in 5:40 in the wrestleback semifinals. He dropped Spencer’s Abe Ortiz in 53 seconds to place seventh, finishing the day with a 1-2 mark.

Caden Wright (145) and Tucker Christie (285) both went 0-2.

Brookings was open at 126, 182 and 220.

Brookings plays host to Yankton and Sioux Falls Roosevelt in a triangular today at 5 p.m.

Mid Dakota Monster

PRESHO – Kingsbury County totaled 56.5 points and took 17th in the 25-team field in the two-day event, which concluded Saturday.

Winner won with 255 team points, edging second-place Mobridge-Pollock (244). Spearfish was third at 196.

Gavin Holland led the Knights with a third-place finish at 152 pounds. Alec Dobson was fourth at 120 and Monte Albrecht ended up seventh in the 145-pound weight class.

Holland advanced to the semifinals by tech-falling Spearfish’s Jordan Keifert 23-8 in 3:54, pinning Custer’s Elijah Steele in 3 minutes and putting Hot Springs’ Wyatt Pulscher on his back in 4:42. He dropped an 8-2 decision to Mobridge-Pollock’s Isaac Olson in the semis. Holland closed strong by beating Potter County’s Chayce Rausch 5-0 in a consolation semi and Spearfish’s Tashon Clark 7-6 in the third-place bout.

Dobson, a 120-pounder, also opened with back-to-back pins, dropping Lyman’s Tristan Penny in 34 seconds and Todd County’s River Colombe in 1:48. He fell 16-0 in 4:08 to Winner’s Atlas Willuweit in the quarterfinals. Dobson then topped O’Neil’s Trinity Mosel 4-2, Sunshine Bible Academy’s Iver Paul 9-3 and Lead-Deadwood’s Max Johnson 14-5 in consolation action. Tucker Murtha of Parkston edged Dobson 2-0 in the third-place bout.

At 145, Albecht received a first-round bye and picked up an 11-5 decision over Hill City’s Kalel Worischek. He lost by fall in 1:35 to Winner’s Sam Kruger in the quarters. Albrecht beat Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes’ Spencer Hanson 5-2 in his first consolation matchup, fell 7-2 to Mobridge-Pollock’s Tucson Freeman and then toppled Stanley County’s Reid Wieczorek 8-3 in the seventh-place match.

Tucker Anderson (113 pounds) went 2-2. Dylan Zell (106) and Connor Hoffman both finished 1-2. Caleb Clark (106), Cael Schoenfelder (120), Nolan Coughlin (126), Christian Virchow (160), Owen Kerkvliet (170) and Kain Gilligan (182) each ended up 0-2.

Dan Pansch/Jesse James Invitational

BRANDON – Flandreau had 25 team points and took 18th out of 19 teams Saturday.

Canton won the title with 212 points and Harrisburg (196) was second.

Michael Witte placed third at 145 pounds to lead the Fliers.

He majored Brandon Valley’s 12-1 in the first round and added an 11-0 major decision over Luverne’s Jed Dooyema in the quarterfinals. After falling 3-1 to Brandon Valley’s Creighton Klinkhammer in the semis, Witte majored Harrisburg’s Max Johnson in a consolation bout and won by forfeit in the third-place match.

Brenden Ten Eyck (152 pounds) went 2-2 and Hunter Witte (106) was 1-2 as both wrestlers won a prelim bout. Brayden Sayler (132) and Preston Keith (160) both finished 0-2.
