Schoon wins at 182; Bobcats place fifth at Yankton Invitational

YANKTON – Jacob Schoon claimed the 182-pound title as the Bobcats scored 123.5 points to finish fifth at the Yankton Invitational on Saturday.

Rapid City Stevens edged Pierre, 218.5-215.5, for the team title.

In addition to Schoon’s individual championship, Nolan Archer (126) and Logan Bowes (160) finished second, while Gus Miller placed third; Luke Rasmussen (170) finished fourth; and Jaxon Bowes (138) placed fifth.

Tucker Christie posted a 1-2 mark at 285 while Koby Bartels went 0-2 at 132.

Schoon pinned all four of his opponents to claim the title at 182 pounds. He won the championship match in 2 minutes over Pierre’s Garrett Leesman. He opened with a win by fall in 54 seconds over Brock Schroeder of Lennox; needed 2:09 to pin Madison’s Thomas Seppela; and then, advanced to the title match with a pin Jordan Gall of Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon in 2:22.

Archer fell in the 126-pound championship match, 9-8, to Riley Williams of Lennox. He opened with a pin of Madison’s Jess Englert in 44 seconds before beating Beau Beavers of O’Gorman, 4-2. Archer advanced to the title match with a 7-3 decision over Vermillion’s Jarrett Rueb.

Logan Bowes lost 8-7 to Stevens’ Nate Allen in the 160-pound championship match. He won his first two matches by fall – in 1:04 over Ben Zarr of Lennox and in 3:14 over Pierre’s Jaret Clarke – before moving into the title match with a 6-0 decision over Joe VanOverschelde of Mitchell.

Miller won a 2-0 decision over Pierre’s James Lees to place third at 220. He opened with a 5-1 decision over Gunnar Gehring of Pierre, and then, pinned Dakota Valley’s Mitchell Kistner in 3:31. Miller lost, 4-3, by a tiebreaker to Mitchell’s Carter Max to drop to the third-place match.

Rasmussen finished fourth after dropping a 6-4 decision to Brock Schroeder of Lennox in the 170 third-place match. He opened with a 16-0 technical fall over Madison’s Mitch Williams in 5:39 and then, pinned Lincoln’s Jacob Murphy in 1:48. Rasmussen lost by fall in the semifinals to Josh Crownover of Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon in 2:45, but came back with a 16-1 technical fall in 4:30 over Madison’s Avery Williams to move into the third-place match. 

Jaxon Bowes placed fifth with a 3-1 sudden victory win over Mitchell’s Logan Sparks in the 138 fifth-place match. He opened with a win by fall in 2 minutes over Bobby Smidt of Lennox, but dropped a 5-3 decision to West Central’s Landry Knight in the quarterfinals. Bowes rallied with a pair of consolation wins – an injury win over Madison’s Sutton Bern, followed by a 15-0 technical fall in 2:52 over Tri-Valley’s Luke Lofswold. He lost by fall in 4:36 to Stevens’ Darien Malone to drop into the fifth-place match.

At 285, Christie opened with a win by fall in 3:12 over Pierre’s Wesley Harsma, but then, dropped a 1-0 decision to Caleb Dagel of Roosevelt. In the consolation bracket, Christie fell 3-0 to Douglas’ Connor Braun to be eliminated.

Koby Bartels went 0-2, losing by fall in 56 seconds to Jaetin DeCou of Lennox before dropping a 5-3 sudden victory decision to Tri-Valley’s Carson Norgaard in the 132 consolation bracket.

On Tuesday, the Bobcats travel to Brandon to compete in a 5 p.m. triangular.
