ELMHURST, Ill. – For the fifth consecutive year, South Dakota State University has claimed The Summit League's Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sports Award. The Jackrabbits were presented the award Wednesday night during the league's annual meetings.
On the strength of conference titles in cross country and golf, SDSU accumulated 39 points in the men's all-sports race. North Dakota State was second with 35 points, followed by the University of South Dakota with 30 points. Programs are awarded points in relation to their final regular season or conference meet placings in league-sponsored sports.
The Jackrabbits came up short in their quest to win a fifth consecutive Commissioner's Cup, which is a combined men's and women's competition. SDSU placed third in both the Commissioner's Cup and Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports Award races.
North Dakota State won the Commissioner's Cup title with 89 points, edging the South Dakota with 88.5 points. The Jackrabbits were third with 86 points.
South Dakota claimed the women's all-sports title with 58.5 points, outpacing North Dakota State with 54 points and SDSU with 47 points.
The men's all-sports award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women's award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU's athletic program from 1994-2001.
