BROOKINGS – South Dakota State beat Omaha two more times – 7-2 and 6-4 – during Summit League baseball action Friday at Erv Huether Field to complete a regular-season sweep of the Mavericks.

The Jackrabbits (25-22, 18-12) have won eight consecutive games entering the postseason. UNO finished the year 12-40 (9-19)

The Summit League Baseball Championship begins Wednesday with third-seeded SDSU taking on second-seeded North Dakota State at noon and top-seeded Oral Roberts facing fourth-seeded Western Illinois at 6 p.m.

A complete tournament schedule is in the Scoreboard on Page 14.

Notes: The Jackrabbits can finish in a tie for second in the conference standings if the Bison lose at IPFW today. Either way, NDSU is the No. 2 seed because it holds the head-to-head tiebreaker – a 4-2 regular-season advantage – over SDSU. … SDSU went 6-0 versus UNO. The Jackrabbits posted a 5-3 win Thursday after sweeping the Mavericks on March 17-19 in Omaha by the scores of 5-2, 15-0 (seven innings) and 13-4.

Game 1

• SDSU 7, UNO 2

The Jackrabbits took control during a wild, four-run fifth inning.

SDSU put up the four runs on three hits in the big frame, which saw Maverick starting pitcher Payton Kinney and UNO head coach Evan Porter get ejected.

Trailing 2-0, SDSU’s Landon Badger drew a four-pitch walk to open the bottom of the fifth and Skyler Wenninger singled. Both runners advanced on Nick Smith’s sacrifice bunt.

Badger scored on a wild pitch with two outs. Luke Ringhofer walked to put runners on the corners, and a Matt Johnson RBI single knotted the score at 2-all.

Newt Johnson was grazed by a 2-2 pitch, which appeared to anger Kinney and led to a visit to home plate by Porter.

Anthony Schneider drove the next pitch to center for a two-run single, putting the Jackrabbits ahead 4-2.

Kinney was ejected by home plate umpire Joel Hospodka immediately following the play. Porter again emerged from the dugout and was tossed soon thereafter.

SDSU pulled away with single runs in each of the next three innings.

Badger reached on an error in the sixth, moved to second on a groundout and, following a walk to Smith, scored on a fielding error after Tony Kjolsing lifted a single to left to give SDSU a 5-2 cushion.

In the seventh, Newt Johnson got it going with a one-out single and Schneider was hit by a pitch. Josh Kunzmann stepped up with a run-scoring hit to make it 6-2.

Ringhofer sparked a two-out rally in the eighth with a single to center and Matt Johnson then drew a base on balls. Newt Johnson’s RBI single provided for the final margin.

Newt Johnson finished 3-for-4 to lead the Jackrabbits’ 11-hit attack. Kjolsing went 2-for-5 with a double.

Ethan Kenkel picked up the win on the mound after allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings.

Left-hander Bryce Hanson worked the final four frames to earn his first career save. He surrendered just one hit with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.

UNO’s Ryan Cate went 2-for-4 and Grant Suponchick doubled.

Kinney gave up four runs on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Cole Patterson singled, moved to second on Nate Mallott’s sacrifice bunt and then scored on an error as Jack Kalina singled to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.

In the third, Riley Herold reached second on an error, took third on Cate’s single and then scampered home as Patterson hit into a double play to put the visitors up 2-0.
