BROOKINGS – Cal State Bakersfield went 2-0, Northern Arizona 1-0, host South Dakota State 0-1 and Valparaiso 0-2 to open the Hampton Inn Jackrabbits Invitational on Friday at Frost Arena.

• CSU Bakersfield 3, SDSU 2

The Jackrabbits had to rally to force a fifth set, where Cal State jumped out to a 6-2 lead on the way to a 15-7 triumph in the decider.

The Roadrunners won the first set, 25-22, before SDSU came back with a 25-18 win in Set 2 to even the match at 1-1 heading into the intermission.

After Cal State took the third set, 25-18, the Jacks won Set 4, 25-22, to send the match into the fifth.

The Roadrunners used a balanced attack – six players had eight or more kills – to keep the SDSU defense off balance as Desiree Suhkov and Mattison Degarmo each finished with 12. Haylee Roberts added 11; Sydney Haynes tallied nine while Briannah Mariner and Aleksand Djordjevic chipped in with eight apiece.

Sidney Wicks notched 26 set assists as Fabio Andrade finished with 22.

For the Jacks, Mackenzie Hennen posted a double-double of 17 kills and 11 digs as Ashlynn Smith notched 10 kills and eight digs. Sierra Peterson contributed nine kills, a solo block and two block assists while Payton Richardson also had nine kills.

Maddie Fay (32) and Mattison Munger (18) combined for 50 set assists.

"Obviously, I'm bummed that we didn't pull out the win, but overall this was probably some of the better volleyball that we've played," coach Nicole Cirillo told SDSU Sports Information. "Our passing was good. We were able to run our offense and got a lot of different people involved. It just came down to a few unforced errors and in a few of the sets serving was an issue. But overall, I'm happy with the serves, just not the amount of serves in a row we missed."
