SDSU finishes 3-2 in UNF/Dolphin Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ali Herdliska broke the school home runs record as the South Dakota State softball team went 2-1 in the UNF/Dolphin Invitational over the weekend to finish with a 3-2 record in the event.

The Jackrabbits beat Colgate 1-0 but fell 2-1 to Jacksonville on Saturday before toppling College of Charleston 9-4 on Sunday.

Herdliska, a senior from Solon, Iowa, went deep in the win over the Raiders. It marked her 36th career homer, breaking a tie with Devan Larsen (2013-16) atop the school’s all-time list.

SDSU (6-4) returns to action at the Central Arkansas Invitational in Conway, Ark.

The Jackrabbits face Jackson State at 1:30 p.m. and the host Sugar Bears at 6 p.m. Friday. They play UCA again at 3:45 p.m. Saturday before taking on North Alabama at 6 p.m. The Jackrabbits and Lions face off at 9 a.m. Sunday to conclude the event.

Sunday

 SDSU 9, College of Charleston 4

The Jackrabbits scored four runs in both the second and fifth innings while racking up 15 hits overall.

All nine starters recorded a hit.

Bailey Janssen was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Ali Herdliska (double), Julia Andersen and Lyndsey Crist each added a pair of hits. Erin Mullen had a two-run double and Yanney Ponce added an RBI double.

Taylor Compton worked 3 2/3 innings to earn the win, giving up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Kendra Conrad allowed one run on two hits over the final 3 1/3 frames.

Saturday

 SDSU 1, Colgate 0

Olivia Douglas tossed a five-hit shutout with five strikeouts and two walks, and Ali Herdliska blasted her record-setting homer to lead the Jackrabbits.

Douglas struck out the side in the top of the first and Herdliska homered in the bottom of the inning.

Herdliska finished 1-for-1 with a pair of walks. Caelyn Christiancy was 2-for-2 and Peyton Daugherty 2-for-3.

The Raiders’ Bella Crow gave up one run on six hits and three walks in six innings.

 Jacksonville 2, SDSU 1

The Dolphins’ Alyssa Bilodeau surrendered one run on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in a complete-game performance.

Jacksonville’s Hannah Roberts opened the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.

SDSU pulled even in the second on Mallory McQuistan’s solo homer. She finished 2-for-3.

The Dolphins’ Makenzie Buss, who ended up 2-for-3, singled to lead off the fourth. She moved to second on a groundout and third on a flyout before stealing home for the go-ahead run.

Jackrabbit starter Taylor Compton allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks in 5 2/3 innings.
