BROOKINGS – South Dakota State pushed its home winning streak to 23 games with an 86-63 defeat of Bemidji State on Saturday evening at Frost Arena.

“This was another game for us to grow as a team,” coach T.J. Otzelberger told SDSU Sports Information. “I thought in the first half we were a little complacent defensively and settled on offense, but I was happy with how we came out in the second half and thought we attacked better on both ends.

“I like the possibilities of where we can go with this group.”

Mike Daum posted his third consecutive double-double to open the season, scoring 26 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He is now fifth in Summit League history with 2,301 career points.

David Jenkins added 16 points, Skyler Flatten 13 and Tevin King 11.

SDSU was up 48-36 at halftime.

Logan Bader dropped in 16 points and Derek Thompson totaled 15 to go with 13 rebounds for the Beavers, who played the game as an exhibition.

The Jackrabbits (3-0) open a big road trip with a game against Florida Gulf Coast on Friday at 7 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla.

SDSU then competes in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla.

With 2,301 career points, the senior moved from seventh to fifth in career points in Summit League history, passing the legendary Tony Bennett (2,285 from 1988-92) of Green Bay and IUPUI’s Alex Young (2,286 from 2008-12). He is 62 points shy of Nate Wolters’ SDSU record.

Daum earns weekly honor

SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State’s Mike Daum was named Summit League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Jackrabbits open the season with three wins in the first week of action.

The 6-foot-9 senior and two-time Player of the Year averaged 23 points and 12.3 rebounds per game, tallying three double-doubles and shooting better than 46 percent from the field.

This is the 12th time Daum has earned the weekly honor, picking up the award six times last year. He is third behind Nate Wolters and Caleb Green (Oral Roberts, 2003-07), who each have 15, for the most Player of the Week honors in Summit League history
