CANCUN, Mexico – South Dakota State dominated the fourth quarter to beat No. 21 South Florida 61-50 in the opening game of the Cancun Challenge on Thursday morning.

The Jackrabbits outscored the Bulls 23-10 in the final period.

Myah Selland (6-of-10) scored 17 points and Paiton Burckhard (7-of-11) added 16 as the duo went a combined 13-of-21 from the field. Burckhard grabbed nine rebounds.

Burckhard had a basket with 5:24 to go to tie things up at 46-all and open a 15-0 run that put SDSU in control.

Tori Nelson’s layup in transition with 4:57 remaining put SDSU on top for good at 48-46.

Burckhard sandwiched buckets around Selland’s traditional three-point play to make it 55-46 with 2:54 to play.

Rylie Cascio Jensen and Tylee Irwin sandwiched charity tosses around Selland’s two free throws as the Jackrabbits were ahead 59-46 with 1:25 showing on the clock.

SDSU led 19-16 after a quarter and 30-29 at halftime. USF was up 40-38 at the end of three and pushed the margin to 42-38 on Elena Tsineke’s bucket early in the fourth.

The Jackrabbits shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the field and the Bulls ended up at 35.1 percent (20-of-57), including a 4-of-29 clip from 3-point range.

Bethy Mununga posted a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds for South Florida (5-2). The Bulls beat then-No. 15 Texas 64-57 on Nov. 8 at home. Their only previous loss was 58-46 at No. 2 Baylor on Nov. 19.

Per SDSU Sports Information, the Jackrabbits are 11-28 versus ranked Division I teams since 2006-07.

South Dakota State (4-2) takes on Notre Dame today at 10 a.m. and Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
