BROOKINGS – The South Dakota State baseball team beat Sioux Falls 11-7 in its home opener on a pleasant Tuesday at Erv Huether Field.

The Jackrabbits racked up five runs in the opening inning.

Drew Beazley was hit by a pitch and Nick Smith singled. Gus Steiger followed with an RBI single.

Josh Falk deposited an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field. The three-run homer made it 4-0.

Logan Holtz singled with one away. Matthew Krambeck singled with two outs, and Holtz scored on an error on the play.

Smith tripled with one out in the second and later scored on Steiger’s groundout to push the margin to 6-0.

The Cougars countered with six consecutive runs.

Grant Lung got USF on the board with an RBI single in the third.

Josh Rewaldt led off the sixth with a home run. Sam Michels and Connor King contributed run-scoring hits. Nash Dalzell and Michels both sprinted home on a fielding error to knot things up at 6-6.

Krambeck and Landon Badger opened the bottom of the sixth with singles, before advancing on Beazley’s sacrifice.

Smith drove in a run with a single and Badger scored on a balk. Following a hit by Steiger, Smith scampered home on a wild pitch to put SDSU ahead 9-6.

Rewaldt got the seventh inning going like he started the sixth – with a home run – which pulled USF within 9-7.

The Jackrabbits closed out the scoring in the seventh.

Krambeck doubled with one out and Badger was hit by a pitch. Krambeck scored on a throwing error before Badger stole third and subsequently made it home on another throwing error.

Smith and Krambeck both finished 3-for-4. Falk, who also doubled, and Steiger added two hits apiece. Ryan McDonald added a two-bagger.

Alex Marro pitched the final two innings to pick up his first win, allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk. Starter Korey Kuhlmann gave up one run on four hits with two strikeouts in three innings.

For the Cougars (10-32), Rehwaldt was 3-for-5 with the two homers and King ended up 3-for-4. Michels added a pair of hits, including a double.

John Berroth took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits with three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. Starter Jacob Emerson allowed six runs – five earned – on eight hits with three strikeouts in three innings.

The second-place Jackrabbits (19-16, 11-7), who exceeded last season’s win total, resume Summit League play with three games at league-leading Omaha (16-2 SL) this weekend. Game times are Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
