Squirts shine; bring home hardware on home tournament

BANTAM A

The Bantam A Rangers lost for just the third time this season as Sioux Falls beat Brookings, 7-2, in an SDAHA league game on Sunday at the Scheels Ice Plex.

The Rangers, 11-3-0-1, are tied for second in the standings with Fremont (11-4-0-1) with 23 points as Sioux Falls (15-1-1-0) leads with 31 points.

Brookings closes its regular season with three home games this weekend – facing Mitchell on Friday; taking on Oahe on Saturday; and Sunday versus Huron.

• Sioux Falls 7, Brookings 2

The Flyers scored less than 2 minutes into the game before the Rangers answered on Logan Bortnem’s unassisted tally 3 minutes later.

Sioux Falls added two more first-period goals for a 3-1 lead after one and then tacked on three in the second for a 6-1 edge heading into the third.

Ashton Witte found the back of the net early in the final frame off assists from Wes Koenig and Talon Richter, but the Flyers matched it less than 30 seconds later for the final margin.

Brookings held a 22-20 advantage in shots as Kade Brecher (12) and Carter Schulz (1) combined for 13 saves in the loss.

PEEWEE A

The PeeWee A Rangers prepped for this weekend’s state tournament by winning four SDAHA league games last weekend. On Friday, Brookings shut out Sioux Falls, 11-0, and then swept Fremont, 3-0 on Saturday and 8-0 on Sunday. The Rangers capped off the weekend with a 5-0 shutout of Brandon on Sunday afternoon.

The Rangers finished second in the league standing with 45 points, courtesy of a 22-1-0-1 mark. Rushmore, 23-1, won the regular-season title with 46 points and will be the top seed at the PeeWee A State Tournament at Larson Ice Center.

Brookings, seeded second, faces No. 7 seed Huron at 5 p.m. on Friday.

• Brookings 11, Sioux Falls 0

The Rangers scored twice in the first period – an unassisted goal by Jacob Kahle and a goal by Eli Johnson, set up by Breck Hirrschoff and Owen Schneider – before tacking on four goals in the second and five more in the third.

In the second, Hirrschoff netted back-to-back goals before David Brink and Zach Struck each lit the lamp. Johnson assisted on the first Hirrschoff tally while Luke Honkomp and Schneider helped on the second. Jack Merritt assisted Brink and Hirrschoff and Schneider picked up assists on Struck’s goal.

Hirrschoff finished off a hat trick, plus one, when he sandwiched a pair of unassisted goals around a score by Merritt, and then, Kahle scored again before Struck found the back of the net for the final margin. Honkomp assisted on the Merritt and Kahle goals while Jacob Peterson set up Struck.

Addison Ronning earned the shutout win with nine saves as the Rangers held a 42-9 edge in shots.

• Brookings 3, Fremont 0

The Rangers scored single goals in each period as they outshot the Flyers, 28-15, with Ronning stopping all 15 shots he faced for the shutout win.

Schneider tallied an unassisted goal in the first and then set up Johnson’s goal in the second period. Honkomp added an insurance goal in the third off a Struck setup.

• Brookings 8, Fremont 0

The Rangers netted four goals in the first; added one in the second; and then tacked on three in the third for the easy win.

Schneider and Struck both lit the lamp to give Brookings the early lead before Kahle made it 4-0 at the intermission with back-to-back goals. Honkomp and Hirrschoff helped Schneider; Merritt and Peterson set up Struck; Schneider and Hirrschoff assisted on Kahle’s first goal; while Peterson and Merritt notched assists on the second.

In the second, Peterson netted the puck off assists from Kahle and Merritt.

Struck cashed in on a power-play chance to open the third-period scoring as Honkomp and Hirrschoff assisted. Johnson made it 7-0 with the assists going to Schneider and Honkomp before Hirrschoff closed out the scored off assists from Merritt and Honkomp.

Ronning notched 16 saves in the shutout win as Brookings fired 36 shots.

• Brookings 5, Brandon 0

The Rangers dominated play by outshooting the home team, 42-10, as Ronning collected his fourth shutout win of the weekend with 10 saves.

Schneider scored two first-period goals as Kahle and Honkomp set up the first and Struck and Honkomp assisted on the second. Hirrschoff’s unassisted tally sent Brookings into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

Merritt and Struck each lit the lamp in the second period for the final scored as Hirrschoff and Brink assisted Merritt and Brink set up Struck.

PEEWEE B BLUE

The PeeWee B Blue Rangers split a pair of SDAHA league games with Rushmore PeeWee B1 to edge them for fourth in the final regular-season standings by a point. Brookings finished 14-7-1 (29 points) to Rushmore’s 14-8 mark and 28 points.

No. 4 seed Blue and fifth-seeded Rushmore B1 face off in Friday’s first round of the PeeWee B State Tournament in Sioux Falls at 2 p.m.

• Rushmore 4, Brookings 3

The Rangers got on the scoreboard first on Jordan Raatz’ goal as Garrett Bothe picked up the assist, but the home team came back to tie the game at 1-1 after one and then went ahead with the only goal of the second period.

In the third period, the Thunder scored first to go up 3-1 before Aidan Austreim tallied an unassisted goal to get the Rangers back within one. But Rushmore scored again for a 4-2 advantage before Raatz notched his second goal off a Gavan Stewart helper for the final.

Egan Jensen finished with 22 saves as Brookings held a 36-26 edge in shots.

• Brookings 5, Rushmore 2

The Rangers made their shots count on Sunday morning as Rushmore outshot Brookings, 23-20, but Jensen stopped 21 shots for the win in goal.

Gage Peterson opened the scoring for the Rangers as Austreim picked up the assist, and then, Stewart gave Brookings a 2-1 lead after a period with an unassisted tally.

Peterson added an unassisted goal in the second period as the Rangers led 3-2 heading into the third.

Raatz scored back-to-back unassisted goals as Brookings pulled away for the 5-2 win.

PEEWEE B WHITE

The PeeWee B White Rangers split a pair of SDAHA league games over the weekend as they beat Sioux Falls B1, 9-2, on Friday; but dropped a 4-1 decision to Sioux Falls B2 on Saturday, to finish the regular season with a 10-12 record. White is seeded eighth and will play top-seeded and undefeated Rushmore PeeWee B2 in Friday’s first round of the PeeWee B State Tournament at 8 p.m. in Sioux Falls.

• Brookings 9, Sioux Falls B1 2

Ren Jacobsen scored two goals in the first period – the first unassisted and the second set up by Cooper Deatherage and Carson Odde – as the Rangers led 2-1 after one.

Odde tallied an unassisted goal to open the second-period scoring before Charles Malone lit the lamp off a Jacob Law assist. Ashton Voss gave Brookings a 5-2 lead through two as Jacobsen and Gerrit Kass earned the helpers.

Jacobsen and Deatherage traded goals in the third period as Deatherage set up Jacobsen’s first goal before scoring an unassisted goal. Odde assisted on Jacobsen’s second goal as Law helped on Deatherage’s second tally.

• Sioux Falls B2 4, Brookings 1

The Flyers scored once in the first and twice in the second period to lead 3-0 through two.

The Rangers got on the scoreboard in the third period on Law’s unassisted goal as Sioux Falls matched it for the three-goal win as Brayden Bingham suffered the loss in goal.

SQUIRT A

The Squirt A Rangers posted a 2-2 record at the Squirt A Tournament at Larson Ice Center over the weekend to place fifth.

On Friday, the Rangers won their opener, 2-1, over Marshall, but lost both games on Saturday – 7-0 to Waseca and 6-1 to Fremont. In Sunday’s fifth-place game, Brookings broke a scoreless tied with three goals in the third period for the 3-0 win over Sioux Falls.

• Brookings 2, Marshall 1

The Rangers scored on two of their four shots in the first period as Cody Jacobson tallied an unassisted goal before Riley Linstad lit the lamp off a Mavrick Bortnem assist as Brookings led 2-1 after one.

Ryder Anderson stopped eight Marshall shots in the second period and nine in the third to seal the win as he finished with 19 saves overall for the win in net as the Tigers held a 20-13 edge in shots.

• Waseca 7, Brookings 0

Waseca scored five times in the first and twice in the third as they outshot the Rangers, 31-7, with Anderson coming up with 24 saves in the loss.

• Fremont 6, Brookings 1

Fremont led 2-0 after one and 4-0 through two as the Flyers held a 25-12 advantage in shots, with Anderson collecting 19 saves in the loss.

Cooper Schneider’s goal with less than 3 minutes to play off assists from Gideon Merhib and Jacobson got the Rangers off the schneid.

• Brookings 3, Sioux Falls 0

Scoreless heading into the final period, Linstad started the scoring off an assist from Talon Hyde before Bortnem tallied an unassisted goal. Thor Kahler provided the final margin with Linstad and Denver Qiao earning the helpers.

Anderson earned his first shutout victory with 17 saves as Brookings outshot the Flyers, 29-17.

SQUIRT B

The Squirt B Red Rangers lost their opening game at the Squirt B Tournament at Larson Ice Center over the weekend before bouncing back to win two of their next three to take seventh place.

Brookings dropped its opener, 9-0, to Worthington on Friday, and then, on Saturday skated to a 5-2 win over Oahe before being shut out, 11-0, by Red Lake Falls. The Rangers defeated Marshall, 3-2, on Sunday to claim seventh.

• Worthington 9, Brookings 0

The visitors dominated play, outshooting the Rangers 28-5 as they scored two first-period goals; added three in the second; and then, tacked on four in the third.

Matthew Bothe notched 19 saves in the loss in goal.

• Brookings 5, Oahe 2

After a scoreless first period, Miyah Foerster got the Rangers on the scoreboard in the second period with an unassisted tally. Taryn Richter’s goal made it 2-0 through two as Andrew Hahn earned the assist.

The Capitals tied the game with two goals early in the third period – the second on a power play – before Brookings answered with three straight. Richter scored what proved to be the game-winning goal – unassisted – before Jameson Hunter lit the lamp off a Garrett VanderWal assist. Richter notched a hat trick off a setup from Issak Earley as Bothe collected seven saves for the win in net.

• Red Lake Falls 11, Brookings 0

Red Lake Falls scored five goals in the first period; added one in the second; and then tacked on five more in the third period for the win.

Bothe finished with 33 saves as the Rangers were outshot 44-1.

• Brookings 3, Marshall 2

The Rangers led 2-0 after one and 3-1 through two before holding on for the win to take seventh.

Earley scored two minutes into the game off as Camden Reicks assisted, and then, Foerster netted the puck off a Hahn setup for the 2-0 lead.

In the second period, Marshall cut the lead in half before Richter tallied an unassisted goal to make it 3-1 through two.

The Tigers scored late in the final period to get within one but couldn’t get any closer as Brody Williams notched 13 saves in the win as the Tigers held a 15-14 edge in shots.
