Steven P. Carpenter, 65, of Brookings, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019, at the Brookings Health System, Brookings. Private family services will be held. In Lieu of Flowers the family suggests memorials be directed to the Steve and Karla Carpenter Athletic Scholarship fund at SDSU.
Steven P. Carpenter was born on Jan. 23, 1954, in Tyler, MN, the son of Paul A. and Patricia A. (McCaffrey) Carpenter.
Steve received his education in Lake Benton, MN, and was a graduate of the Lake Benton High School. He continued his education in the meat cutting class at Pipestone Vocational School in Pipestone, MN.
He served in the United States Army as a (Airborne) parachute jumper during the Vietnam Era from 1974 until 1977. In 1981, he was employed at 3M in Brookings. Steve was united in marriage to Karla DeBoer on Nov. 12, 1983 in Lake Benton.
He was active in baseball, softball, golf and hunting. He enjoyed being a handyman and took great pride in his yard. He enjoyed traveling, golfing with friends, SDSU sports and was an avid fan of football and basketball. He loved major league baseball and traveled to 20 different baseball parks.
Steve is survived by his wife, Karla of Brookings; his sisters, Sue Houck of San Diego, CA, Mary Willert of Glendale, AZ, Cindy (Dan) Enke of Appleton, MN; one brother, John (Lynne) Carpenter of Glendale, AZ; brothers-in-law, Brian (Gerri) DeBoer of Watertown, SD, Marty (Rennie) DeBoer of Mitchell, SD; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pat and Paul; one sister, Patty Blair; his mother and father-in-law; Mavis and Donald and their three precious Schnauzers Howie, Kirby and Lewie.
