Susan J. Wilske, 70, of Flandreau, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Burial is in Union Cemetery in Flandreau. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau.

Susan was born on March 11, 1947, in Blair, Nebraska, the daughter of Hal and Betty (Show) Walker.

She attended school in Tekamah, graduating from there, before going on to attain her B.S. degree in elementary education from Sioux Falls College. Susan started her teaching career in Ainsworth, Nebraska, in 1970.

She married  Larry Wilske on July 31, 1971, in Tekamah. They had two children, Jeffrey and Jennifer. In 1974 Susan started teaching second grade at Flandreau Public Schools. She started the “Mother’s Day Plates” and worked together on getting the gingerbread house project going. Susan was very dedicated to her career, often spending both Saturday and Sunday in her classroom. Mrs. Wilske retired in 1995. Susan was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and was active in the Sunday school education. She enjoyed traveling, reading her Bible, an occasional game of bowling, and going out for a movie and supper.

Above all, she loved her family and grandchildren, often spoiling the grandkids with gifts she had shopped for.

Susan is survived by her husband, Larry; children, Jeffrey Wilske and Jennifer (Shannon) VanDyke all of Flandreau; four grandchildren; brothers, Roger (Marilyn) Walker of Anniston, Alabama, and Steve (Joan) Walker of Tekamah, Nebraska; a niece and three nephews; and brother-in-law, Jerry Wilske.

Susan was preceded in death by uncles, Roland Walker and Harvey (Shirley) Walker; and niece, Kimberly Walker.

Susan was a regular contributor to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, so in her honor, consider memorials to this great cause.
