RENNER – Mason Townsend homered in the sixth inning as the Yankton Tappers beat the Cubs 3-2 to open the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament on Friday evening at Renner Ball Park.

The night game between Renner and Brandon Valley was still in progress at the Register’s deadline.

Brookings faces the loser of that game today at 11 a.m., while Yankton takes on the winner at 1:30 p.m.

Play in the other half of the bracket gets underway today as the Sioux Falls Brewers take on Castlewood at 5 p.m. and Sturgis and Aberdeen square off at 7:30 p.m. Those four teams play their loser’s and winner’s bracket games Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.

Townsend drove an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left field with two outs in the top of the sixth to put the Tappers ahead 3-2.

He finished the game 3-for-4, adding a double.

Luke Bauske earned the win on the mound after allowing two runs – one earned – on five hits with two strikeouts in six innings.

Justin Underwood picked up the save, tossing three scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He struck out two batters and walked a pair.

Kyle Krogman took the loss as he surrendered three runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.

The Cubs grabbed an early 2-0 lead.

Krogman led off the bottom of the first with a single and JaColby Anderson was hit by a pitch. Todd Standish followed with a hard groundball, and an error on the play allowed Krogman to score.

Jeff Fish followed with an RBI double to center – his first of two doubles in the game.

The Tappers answered with a two-out rally in the third.

Alex Mueller drew a base on balls and Derrik Nelson singled.

Sheldon Gant, who ended up 2-for-3, had a two-run double to left to knot things up at 2-2.

Leading 3-2, Yankton threatened in the ninth.

Townsend got it going with a single. Devin Gullickson (one out) and Ross Heine (two outs) both walked to chase Krogman. However, Caleb Stratmoen got Mike Heine to fly out to keep it a one-run deficit.

Brookings’ Seth Fraser opened the bottom of the ninth with a single, but a double play derailed the comeback attempt.

Austin Koenig was 2-for-4 with a double.
