BROOKINGS – South Dakota State swimmers and Pierre natives Weston Christensen and Christopher Rumrill were named Thursday to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 At-Large Team.
A senior, Christensen was selected to the 12-member team for the second year in a row after compiling a 3.94 cumulative GPA while majoring in civil engineering. A four-year letterman, Christensen completed his collegiate swimming career this past winter by recoding top-10 marks in school history in both the 1,000-yard and 1,650-yard freestyle. A member of the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America Men's At-Large Third Team, he also has been a part of SDSU's Human-Powered Vehicle Team and served as an officer for the Jackrabbit Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Rumrill, a junior, has posted a perfect 4.0 GPA as an electrical engineering major. He scored in three individual events (100 individual medley, 200 IM, 200 freestyle) and swam on the Jackrabbits' fourth-place 800 freestyle relay at the 2017 Summit League Championships. A two-time member of the Summit League All-Academic Team, Rumrill has been inducted into several engineering-related honor societies at SDSU.
Both Christensen and Rumrill will advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration later this month. The men's at-large team is made up of student-athletes competing in fencing, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling.
Selections to the Academic All-District 6 At-Large Team were based upon a vote of sports information directors in Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Candidates must be at least a sophomore in athletic standing, a starter or key reserve on his team and carry at least a 3.3 GPA.
